very interesting indeed. i think as time goes on the hybrids will come down in price therefore bringing their energy usage down as well.

Interesting yes... but it doesnt say where the energy is comming from. While it may use a lot of energy in its life time you have to think of where the energy thats its using is comming from. As in not all electrical energy is made from using non renewable resources. Power is made in other forms that are all put onto the grid such as hydroelectric, wind towers, nuclear power, geothermal, and solar. Also the hybrids recharge themselves a little with regenerative brakes so it does have other things to offset what this article states.
While it uses more energy, it displaces the energy used into other resources as well. Im not saying this to defend anything in anyway, just to think of the other side of the coin.
