Need help picking a car!!

Well, I made it to Arizona, and indeed, it's more beautiful than I remembered. Truth is, I only knew 29 Palms California (ok, mojave desert anyone?) and Yuma AZ. Phoenix is much nicer.

Anyway, I am contemplating buying a vehicle which I would then DRIVE back to Ohio, clean up, and sell due to it being SOOO much more rust free than anything else that old in Ohio! :)

I need help in figuring out which one of these cars might actually SELL more easily or catch more money than the other. That's where you guys come in.
Keep in mind that I haven't gone to see any of them yet!

Here's most of what I am seeing in the papers, I'm leaving out some of their simple info like pw, pl, bucket seats, a/c, etc.

70 Challenger - V8, auto, runs, very straight, some rust. $9800
71 Camaro - 350 2 barrel, auto, new paint and int., runs great. Orign. Owner - $9000
69 Firebird Convertible - 350 auto, new int. & top, $11,800
68 Olds Cutlass S Convertible - auto, $14,500
67 Clone GTO Convertible - 455 engine, red w/black top.
72 Camaro - aftermarket rims, fresh motor, trans, tires. $5000
74/75 camaro - (doesn't say) - 16k Original miles, 350, runs & drives great. "ready to paint". $3500
69 Vette - 427/390hp, numbermatching, 4 spd, storage since 1981, solid frame, "new jig assemble front end" (whatever that means). $15000
73 Mustang Convertible - 351, auto, 96k miles,Mach I hood/spoilers $8900
70 Mustang Convertible - 302 auto, newer top, blue ext, black cloth int, owned for 20 yrs, $13700

69 Chevelle - 'move forces sale', 'new everything'. :), "half of appraised value" - $8900

68 LeMans - V8, very clean, everything works, $4500
67 Impala fastback - 327/275, 107k miles, original owner, $8500
64 Thunderbird - black, 50k orig. miles, $7500
63 Impala SS - 327, 3spd manual, matching numbers $4500
62 Impala - 6 cylinder, solid, rust free, doors, panels, floors, trunk no rust. $4200


That's about it. Remember, I really want to just clean the car, fix a few small things, and then sell it for a profit in the rust belt of the mid-west. I've done it before, do you guys think any of the cars above sound like a worthy contender??? Please let me know your feedback.

I like the Chevelle and the 70 Mustang convert, and the Challenger, other than that, I dunno. :) I have to keep telling myself that this car IS NOT FOR ME! ;) lol!

Can't go wrong with the 70 Challenger, The 69BB vette might catch a few bucks as would the 70 Mustang vert. 69 Chevelle looks good too.

Since your main thinking is that you'll be able to make money as the car will have far less rust than you're used to. I would go with which ever normally is the rustiest, that way it's worthwhile.

Personally I have a soft spot for the 62 impala

Cool! good feedback guys. I needed to bounce these off of people that are into cars.


On the 62 and 63 Impala's, I was concerned that the 62 was only a 6 cylinder, even though the body is supposed to be in real good shape.

On the 63 SS, I was concerned that it was only a 327/275.

Should I be concerned? (for resale value)


I found all of these cars in 2 places. 1 - the local Sunday paper, 2 - a local "auto trader" kind of newspaper/mag.

I'll have to get ya the info on the 63 next time I am able to get online.

Tomorrow is my 'go car shopping' day.

The 70 Mustang conv, and 69 Chevelle were already sold. :(

I'll be checking out the Challenger tomorrow. He did mention that there was rust in the very lower rear quarters, but did not notice any at the tip of the wheel lip. Also, I guess there is a bit of rust in the trunk. Hood, Floorpans, etc are fine........he says. I believe him.

Should I be concerned about the trunk? Does anyone make a replacement trunk pan or patch? Year One maybe? (I'll have to surf later....)


Let me know your thoughts on that 62 Impala 6 cylinder and this Challenger trunk! :)

62 with six is fine, you are not paying for something anyone wants. If you found the same car with a 409 or big 327, they would be more money, and our projects do not want those engines anyway. I am serious about being interested in the 62 if you are not, or if you want to make a buck on me. Ask Sam1, my money is good. lol

Anyway, I checked out the Challenger and it was no where near a $9800 car. There was some kind of hob job on the entire trunk floor from someone else, the drivers floorboard had a ribeted in panel, with a sheet of Dynamat on it, that's it. Rust was taking over the drivers front rocker panel and the entire interior was just nasty. Sure, interior can be replaced, but it painted a picture for the rest of the car too.
The engine bay did look ok though,.....it wasn't the original 318.

71 Camaro orig. owner - green on green. moderate rust at rear window, front window and mucho in trunk. Car had repaint, new-ish interior, and a lifter ticking. I couldn't justify the $9000 for my money. :(

Hey! new Trader came out today! :) I get to start over!

New Trader has a 1970 Cutlass 442, blue with white stripes, 455 floor-auto, black int, bucket seats, rear wing and a "W27 cover". wow, I think I know that the W27 rear is rare, but I thought it was something about the Pumpkin too, not just a cover. What are the odds that this car has "just the cover"? I hope I can verify this somehow.

Price seems a little steep..... it's at $17,500. I'm going to go poke around the Net for prices on them now. If it's as clean as the owner says, it seems like it would be worth the money. Sounds like he'd come down at least the 500 bux, maybe a little more if I tried hard enough.
