Anybody out there know if it's possible to swap an A-body rear end into a g-body car 78-88 regal, cutlass, monte,el camino, malibu. I found a kit from south side machine (SSM), but they are no longer in business:scared: I want to get rid of my wimpy gm 7.5 10 bolt and move up to a 8.5 posi 10 bolt. I'm running a chevy 355ci with a weiand 144 procharger, edelbrock performer rpm heads, nitrous hp cam, ect.(aprox. 500 hp) I picked up a BOP 8.5 posi 10 bolt at a swap meet.(cheap), but it's 4" too wide. Just wondering if it's worth messing with???

I don't know for sure, but my first thought is that the suspension points are probably not going to line up, so you'd have to custom fab suspension links and mounts to get the rear end to work. Is the BOP rear end from an A-body? If so, there's your answer - no. With your power level you should probably look into a housing from Moser or Strange or whoever else and stick a very nice 12 bolt or a 9" in there.

The A body has an 8.2 rear not 8.5 I would look into a 12 bolt or 9 inch. There all all kinds of 9 inch deals on ebay or check out some of the circle track mags for cheap. I was quoted 1300 for a complete 9 inch from a company in St. Louis.

They are close but will not work.
It could be an 8.5 10 bolt if its a 71+ year diff. You can have a shop cut the tubes off of the G body rear and weld then on to the A body center. Thats if you want to stay on the cheap side.

Thanks for the valuable info. Looks like the ford 9" is probably the way to go. looks like you can get the housing for around 300 bucks on ebay. I guess I should plan on spending about $2500.00 for complete hub to hub with disc brakes? Anybody have a connection for something like that?

A body rears will fit if you use the specially angled control arms from Iceman (pitqueen on ebay and
[email protected]) http://www.maliburacing.com/iceman/ You will need more backspacing on the wheels for the wider 8.5"ers, but rears from Buick Grand Nationals are 8.5" and fit right in as you might already know. Cruise montecarloss.com and maliburacing.com. You might find a lot of answers.

I knew someone who was running a 12 bolt out of a 69 chevelle in a 79 el camino. He had 15x8 Weld superlites with the most b.s. you could get (6.5" I think) and it just didn't look right, and the tires still rubbed on the outer rolled lip. I'm kinda like supercharged 86, I'd try to find a GN rear. I wanna say that SS monte's and Olds 442's had the 8.5 as well, but I'm not sure.

The '84 Hurst/Olds, and the '85-'88 442s used the 8.5, I don't think any SS Montes used it though. The GNs did, and I seem to remember the 2+2s did too, but I may be wrong on that one.

You would need to swap over the outer mounts on the axle tubes and get or make z-ed upper control arms. I did it and it works great. If you use a rear fron 65-67 it is only around an inch or so wider per side. I don't have exact measurements. I could get them I think. Frank

There's a ssm (south side machine) A to G-body rear end swap kit on ebay right now. All I would have to do is narrow the A-body rear end 4" ,that I allready own? Anybody have any experience with these? This is a lift bar set-up. Is this any good for for going around coners fast or just in a straight line?
