I have been working on the molds for this for over a year now. I have layed up the inner skin of the lid and will work on the outer next week. It will bolt on and look just like a factory unit, except it will weigh 4 lbs instead of 20 lbs! A hood is next follewed by a RS Nose, anyone have one i can borrow to make a mold off of???? I will post pics when i get a part

A really nice hood, no waves would be perfect. Any flaw in the "plug" will result in a transfewr to the mold, then every part. What i have identified are parts that are non-structural and way to heavy. My goal is to make these parts to fit and function as stock pieces and be much lighter. I am in Northern California, so shipping a hood could prove too costly. I have a RS nose ligned up possibly, front bumperetes and brackets I would like to do as well. Maybe the grill shell. I can use my bumpers and grill to mold off, but need the RS nose. I may even do the nose before the hood, as it is easier. Carbon Fiber is difficult to get right now, so that may hold things up too. I also do this as a hobby, so as time warrants. These parts take a tremendous amount of time to get right, so be patient. I do this for the love of the often overlooked 2nd Gen Camaro. I have picks of the deck lid molds and first parts, but I'm not set up to post them anywhere, I can Email, but if someone would post them for everyone, I will Email them out. Thanks for your interest.

What is your molds made of?

jeffandre
04-04-2006, 11:49 AM
Keith,
The factory nose weighed 18 pounds, the OER weighed 16 pounds (both with the grill divider installed). If you are interested in making the upper header and lower valance let me know. I will be using a custom cage for front end integrity, basically every part that can be glass or CF will be, depending upon how much weight I can lose. Maybe you can build a single piece out of the upper header and lower valance (1 of the fiberglass companies makes this setup as a 1-piece).

Vince,
I can road trip with you, let's talk about it after we determine what parts we are bringing to Keith.

Nice chatting with you Jeff. It has been tough always being the ******* Camaro guy (2nd gen, not 2nd best) If you guys want to come up, let me know. You can even crash at my pad, Chico is a fun place. I didn't realize Matt was in Paradise, about 20 minutes away. Let me know shoot me an Email or private message

***Update***
the inner skin is mounted on the car, to the hinges and latch. it opents and closes, and seals tight. The outer skin is still in the mold, having curing problems due to the cool weather. When ready they will be bonded together. As a note, I had to remove the latch torsion springs, they prove way to strong for the new lid. I will update with pics soon, thanks for you interest

Right now Carbon fiber is in short supply, boeing and the feds are using it up on their new planes. What would you guys like, a clear coated carbon fiber part (like the import guys run), or a painted part to match your car? Feedback is good. I will have one of these deck lids to sell, possibly in the next few months. After I get it all fitted. The first one is cosmeticly perfect on the outside, but will likely need painting on the inside, depending on you tastes. So hold tight, trying to get materials and good weather!

I think your best bet would be to deliver in clear. That gives your customer the option to paint all or part or none depending on their particular project. You don't want to exclude anyone.

that looks awsome. i would send them out with the ability to be painted. local guy has a very nice looking 350z with CF hood and rear wing. he candy coated the parts with the same blue as the car. the CF was still visible below the coloring and looked great. well to me anyway.

Could i send youa first gen spoiler to make one of these out of? Any idea what the cost would be. I would like it in cleared so I could just bolt it on in the natural color, that with my 2005 Lazer blue will look killer on my 67. Could you just cover the original spoiler
with it?

All the stuff i want to make will bolt on like stock. I have 1st gen spoiler to make molds off of, but I really am not in this for a business, I do have a day job, but I want cool parts like the rest of you guys so i make them. I will have a few extra of each part to sell though, so When they are ready you guys will be the first to know. I asked about the painted or Narural clear look because getting a completely flawless part is really tough, although the outer skin is 98% perfect and could be cleared. In a few weeks when i get the lid completely fittrd and the spoiler mounted to the lid, an positive it will function correctly, I will put it up for sale for one of you to try out, get those offers ready, but I want to be sure i have a product that is 100%. Hey BT BONSER get back to work, you have no time for this car crap!

Keith,
Put me on your list for parts! I will be waiting for many CF parts, we'll talk some next weekend.

I got the inner and outer parts bonded together and the latch mechanist mounted. It fits just like the stock piece. As with many new molds the first parts have a few air bubble issues, and also when i bonded the two pieces together, in a few areas I used too much clamping pressure which resulted in small dips. Looks like small dents around the perimeter. i guess this one would make a good candidate for painting. I have another in the molds right now and will be done in the next few weeks as time permits. The finished lid weighs in at 5 lbs, a stock one is over 20 lbs. I added a lot of reinforcement aroung the latch area and where the hinges mount. I could get away with about 3.5 lbs, but I would rather have a durable piece, let me know what you guys think!

This is the second carbon fiber project ive seen lately. The other project was a guy making his 96 cobra into a road racer. He is doing the WHOLE cobra body in carbon fiber(except the floor and the firewall remain metal). From what I understood the molds take the long to make and are quite costly. Couple hundred bucks just for a mold and lots of time making and prepping it(he used a fiberglass mold I think) He said he can use that mold about 50 times. He used carbon fiber/nomex honeycomb. I think he was paying 26 dollars per yard of the fabris and 100 dollars per 4x8 sheet of Nomex Honecomb core. Plus epoxy and other materials. Not cheap at all. He even has a write up on how to do it yourself.

ks71z28 - you said you had a day job... so how did you pick this up? Just reading? Unless the day job involvoes something of this sort:P Anyways, Keep up the good work. I like seeing project like this from fellow enthusiast. I'll look forward to updates.

I have a Manufacturing Engineering degree in polymers from Cal State Chico, In college I built boats, bicycles, and anything else i could out of carbon fiber. 10 years later I decided to give it another try. By the way i just paid $45 a yard for carbon fiber, ouch! last year i paid $26.

:woot: Hey that rear decklid looks killer!!! How about doing the Nose next for those of us that need a nose job. he he he. I've got the upper Header installed and the lower but I can't find a nose that will fit correctly. How much are you asking for your rear deck lids? It looks like I've got to get me one of those!!! I would like to get one that I could paint and match up with the car. Kind of a secret squirrel kind of thing you know.

I am ready to sell the deck lid that is shown in the photos. As described before it is carbon fiber composite, hand layed in epoxy and vacuum bagged. It is very light 5 lbs. I weighed it today with the same scale vs a stock lid which was 24 lbs! This lid has some cosmetic blemishes which would most likely make it a painted item. The upper most portion of the lid, nearest to the back window, has 3 smallish low spots where I applied too much pressure when joining the 2 halves. I spoke with Evercoat and they stated that once the lid is covered in a surfacing primer, there are no issues with using any type of body filler over the carbon fiber. The underside has areas where air was trapped between the cloth and mold resulting in a few quarter sized spots that need to be filled before painting. All voids can also be filled with epoxy and sanded smooth and clearcoated. This works well, but can be time consuming. It may be nice to leave the underside clear to show off this unique piece. I have no intention of mass producing these, nor do I plan to make any more too soon. This is a unique piece and you can be the only other guy on the block to have one. I am not trying to make a million, but I would like to help pay for materials and equipment costs involved. I could list this on an Ebay auction, or if anyone else has a better idea let me know. I'm just trying to eliminate looky-loooos. I appreciate your guys support and want one of you guys to end up with this piece. If no one is interested i will put in up on ebay at the end of the week

thanks,

Keith
