Hey -
Can you guys give me some opinions on which hood you prefer for this car. The only caveat is that if I use a 400 hood, it will have to be one of those "Super 400 hoods" from Spottsperformance.
Which one do you guys like better ?
Thanks a bunch. I really value your opinions. https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2006/02/smile1-1.gif

Me too, without a doubt.

Stupid question. Which one is the 400?

The first one looks a little clunky-ish, although I have to say (and I am not being negative towards anyone's cars or drawings) most cars dont look exactly like those drawings when done. It really helps to give you a good look at what you want to accomplish, and I would LOVE to have one drawn, but they are almost a little cartoon-y.

With that said, that hood may end up looking perfectly fine on that car. You just dont know until you see it applied.

I still like the 2nd one more though :)

the original fire bird hood, the one on top there looks like the hood every other yahoo gets from harwood.

The reason an L-88 came up two fold:
1.) To gain "long" clearance since I have a Hogan sheet metal intake
2.) To put underhood pressure relief venting on the inside front of the L88 section like the Baldwin-Motion Camaro.

A 2" cowl induction hood would be cool, but it doesn't allow for any underhood pressure relief.

Based on your unanimous response, I will figure out way to make a 400 hood work.

Thanks Again Guys. This helps more than you think.

Hey Roger -
My car originally came with the factory hood tach. If I moved it over to the new hood, it could not be the primary tach, since the whole instrument cluster is an integrated system (Autometer Nexus), but it would keep it in the Pontiac theme. That's a cool suggestion.

Hey Guys, what do you think about putting the factory hood tach on ?

ProdigyCustoms
03-25-2006, 05:59 AM
The way you are intigrating the GTO nose into the car, I think it would be cool to do the hood tach also, but maybe it's not a tach anymore

With all the shaving and custom stuff going on with the body of that car, the hood tach would really look out of place, IMO. I would definitely not put any gauges on the hood of that car, were it mine; but, to each his own.

Unfortunately the door handles cannot be shaved. Will not pass NHRA tech inspection - bummer. Still will delete the door locks though.

I personally think lockless door handles look pretty slick when done right. Just kind of a little dash of chrome to break up the side surface.

Then again, I may be the only person who thinks that way.

Speedster the super 400 hood comes with a raised cowl so I bet you could make he vents for reliving the pressure from under the hood go right into the cowl and out through the factory grill between the hood and the windshield. The tach is something I felt I needed on my car but I picked up a 67 tach because it was taller and I thought I would look better with the exaggerated height of the super 400 scoops. One option for the tach might be to put a shift light in the hood tach area. I saw a car that did that once and it look great. Here is a picture of A super 400 hood and the cowl I thik you can see where you could vent the underhood pressure into the cowl.

The 400 hood. Without a doubt.
The super 400 hood would look pretty slick on there if you want more clearance.
On an aside note, why change the very stylish wrap around turn signal/marker lights for the (in my opinion) blah side markers in the drawing?
BTW, I like how the nose is sort of a frenched-in version of the stock piece and sort of a GTO piece all at the same time. Very trick looking.

Thanks for the info Steve. I have been told you cannot vent to the cowl area. It is a high pressure area (that is why cowl induction hoods work so well) and will not vent. It is a great area to take air from, but not add air to. The shift light is a cool idea. It would be right in front of your line of sight.

I would still like to use wrap-around turn signals, but they would be a much thinner/smaller version of factory ones. It depends on if I can get the curved lens. The signals themselves are LED arrays.

I received an email to use the hood tach as a pressure relief vent, but I highly doubt it has anywhere near enough surface area. Plus a hole may look funny, but keep the ideas coming. Like I always tell the guys at the office, assume everyone is smarter than you. People will ALWAYS come up with ideas you never thought of.

Maybe what you could do is make some ductwork and run it through the cowl area and have it open up lower on the car. Can you see the openings on the firewall of my car? There is a big area threre behind the firewall you could use ductwork to run the air from under the hood thru and out the bottom of the car behind the front fender.
