View Full Version : Core Support Closeout

Saw a different style of core support closeout this weekend and really like the looks of it. This isn't as bulky as the DSE support and I think I like it better. Talked to the car owner and he said he made it himself - but didn't go into anymore details. Anyone have a clue as to what it would cost to get something like this made or better yet - someone on this board making them? May not want to go into comp with DSE but sure thought it looked nice.

That is very nice. Looks to me like it is welded right to the core support then smoothed out. Like a one off.

Yeah, the more I studied the pic that is what I saw as well. Maybe it wouldn't be that hard to do after all.

Those, or one just like it, are being sold on eBay for $55 plus S&H. A member, SoCal69, of www.camaros.net is selling them, here is a link to the thread http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=77037&highlight=closeout. I ordered one and will post pics once I get it installed.

Exactly. I will probably buy one from SoCal69 since the DSE closeout is $395. Its a nice product but $55 is easier to afford for an average guy like myself.

I don't think thats the same style of closeout. It's just flat vs the one on hte yellow car has the recessed pocket for the hood latch and stuff.

Nevermind. I couldnt take it any more. I just had to buy that one from SoCal69 for $55.00. Its such a killer price and I couldnt even make it for that cheap on the laser machine.
Kevin,
No its not the same style. That one in the first post was home made and welded to the car. A one off deal.

My thoughts exactly. I figure if I don't like it, it will get me by until I save up enough $$$ for the DSE closeout. He will even personalize the panel for a small fee.

I wouldn't say that the $55 ones on camaros.net are "just like" that first one.. about the only simularity is that they both block off that area.

The one in the first pic is a completely custom piece that is very far from a bolt on deal.

Not saying the $55 one isn't nice (it is) just that in truth it has very little in common with the one posted at the beginning of this thread. :)

I'll take that any day of the week over the Detroit Speed version. I just spent some decent bucks on a Ron Davis radiator. Why would I want to cover it up? I'm not saying anything bad about DSE's product; it's just not for me.

edit: Just bought one.

That sounds too cheap. Better hurry up and place an order before the seller realizes that he ain't making any money.

I agree that he could get more $$ for his closeout. Based on his post over at camaros.net, http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=77037&page=2&highlight=closeout, he said,"The metal is .060 aluminum CNC machined on my mill table.". Anyone know what a sheet of .060 aluminum goes for? I can't imagine that he isn't making some decent $$ given the cost for materials.

Got it yesterday - this is a nice piece. It's not just flat stock either - it has some bends in it. I will try to take it over to my car when I visit it in the paint slammer today and see how well it fits. There's even an adhesive strip on the top to protect against scratching during shipping!

What bends does yours have in it? Did you buy the one from SoCal69? Mine arrived yesterday and its just flat. It looks nice but I didnt have any bends or anything in mine. I would have had it installed last night but the 2 bolts that hold it in snapped right off in my car. Thats just how my luck has been this month. At least the closeout piece is nice. this is the bottom view. The top has a protective strip that I didnt want to peel off yet.

I think so, ebay name was derelss396. It looks like the same piece, except about 4" or so from each end was bent slightly.

CAMAROBOY69

Mabey he doesnt bend them any more. :dunno: Mine was perfectly flat.

smittys69
03-30-2006, 09:56 AM
Yeah - got mine yesterday as well and it is getting painted today. The bends are 2-3" from each end and it only kicks it up just a little. I wouldn't worry abuot it as you can massage it to make it fit as needed. Can't wait to get it installed.

Mine came in two days ago and had two bends, one on each end. I like the piece a lot and can't wait for the support bars. I was also impressed with the packaging.

Very nice.. Should be a vast improvement over the open area.

Does it use the factory support bars?

No if you have factory support bars you will have to trim the very ends of them. About 1/2". Not a big deal at all. A quick zap with a cutting wheel and the ends are gone. :) Like I said if my studs didnt break off last night for the hood bumpers then it would have already been installed.

I made my own and had it powdercoated flat black, which is actually more of a satin. I slipped mine under the support bars so they help hold in down.

just installed mine...looks awesome. now trimming your support bars...is that for 69's only because mine doesnt even come close to the support bars....its suppose to sit under the 2 bolts that attach the hood latch to the header panel. now if you install it above those 2 bolts...then it interferes with the support bars........just curious.....LMK.....

I put the camaro aside now that my road track event is done at gingerman. Spent the last couple months neglecting Heather and her mustang. Last night I moved all the boxes and misc items off of my girlfriends Mustang and put them on my Camaro. So the camaro is going to rest for a while and the Mustang is going to get the attention.
I will try to get pics sometime within the next couple weeks. He sent me a new one because the other one I had was missing the bends at the end. So after I install this new one I will get pics. The other one still looks great on there but this new one will be even better. Socal69 has great customer service and will make sure you are 100% happy. He is going to do real well with his products.

This is a pic of the DSE core support closeout we just installed. It fit perfectly. We painted it black to match the car/engine bay. I also used the DSE hood hinges which I salivate over every time I see them. An incredible piece of engineering. Well worth the money.
