I have always wanted a Venus fly trap. Well yesterday Heather bought me 4 of them! I cant wait to see the plant eat a fly or some kind of insect. They close extremely fast over a piece of paper or whetever else you put into them so I want to see a bug get captured.
Anyone else have one of these exciting plants?

I have some carnivorous freshwater fish, but never a plant. One of these days i'd like to have a decent size shark just cause they are so bad ass.

So have you fed the plant anything cool like pieces of hotdog yet?

I am kind of a fruit-loop. I like to do landscaping, as well as cars, and one of my favorite shows is called 'Gardening by the Yard with Paul James' He is a goofball. Anyway, he did a feature on those plants one Sunday morning a few weeks back. They are freggin cool! I didnt realize there were more than just Venus Fly Traps. Apparently there are all kinds of meat eating plants!

I have a small dog you could use to feed it....i think the wife would be pissed though. *sigh*

I've had lots of them.

-dont cause the traps to shut without food in them. The plant will excrete the ensimes that it takes to digest the bug, and it hurts the plant.

Just give it time. you can "feed" them with dead flies till they catch one on its own.

I seem to remember hearing those things died after eating 3-4 times. Am I incorrect?

The only part that dies is the individual leaf part. If it captures an insect it stays shut until its dead. THen the leaf (mouth) will die. There are at least 10-25 in some of the pots that I have. The cool part was they are only $5.00 each. I will try to get some pics up some time in the near future. I am guilty of putting paper in the mouth to make it close. I ddint realize it was bad for the plant but its just sooo cool to watch them snap shut. I have to try and finda bug to put in there.

I did. It just closes and tickles a little. I did capture some daddy long legs and I held their legs and set the body right into the mouth. I giggled like a little school boy watching the spider get captured. His little body is in the mouth and his legs are sticking straight up. hehe

What the heck...if they're only $5 a piece I might buy a couple for my boys and set em outside this Summer. They'd get a kick out of that. Post some pictures if you get a chance.

Yes only $5.00 each at walmart and each pot can carry anywhere between 10-25 mouths. :) I will try to get pics sometime soon when things wind down. MABEY EVEN A VIDEO! Some of the mouths are about the size of a quarter. Most are smaller. I want to see them catch a fly.
