I am currenty building a new 1 stall garage to get my junk out of my attached garage in hope of transforming most of my car this winter. I started to think of house sq-ft vs. garage sq-ft. I have 864 sq-ft of house with a 705 sq-ft attached garage. I am in the middle of adding 216 sq-ft single car garage. This all sits on a 7200 sq-ft piece of property.
This is what I have so far

I just thought it was interesting!

My house is 2001sqft and the garage is an additional 530sqft. I want a garage thats 3200sqft, but it just wont fit on this postage stamp sized lot.

well my house is 1500 sq ft and it has just a two car garage. I also have a 100 ft shed in the back. My problem is that I have 100 of space behind my house and can not use it for anything but yard. Who needs that in Vegas. The space between my house and the block wall is only 6 ft so I can not get a car back there.

The house is about 4,000Sq Ft which includes my office over the attached garage. The garage is 730Sq FT but it's useless because that's where the "drivers" are parked and my barn is 1440 Sq Ft split into a machine shop, unheated "summer" work area and the heated "winter" work area. I need to get the whole thing done up for heat but time and money has been a big factor in doing that... :crying:

The house is 3588 sf. and the garage is 2 1/2 car. The wife and I park outside so the whole garage is mine for the camaro. Still could be bigger, need a little more storage area.

I've got a 1721 sq. ft. house a detached 2 car garage and a 2560 sq. ft. shop (40x64) with 14 ft. ceiling. I plan on adding another part on to the shop later for car trailers and play toys.

Not sure on the exact number, but the house is about 2800sq ft. and the garage is only 240sq. ft :(. Single car garages are no fun :crying:. But I've got my Uncle's body shop to use anytime, and that's around 11,250sq ft, not including the offices. (It was a really old movie theater turned into a shop about 25 years ago)

One of these years well move and build a 5 bay garage around, 2000 sq ft. or so. Hopefully...

My house is about 1200 sq. ft. It's a raised bungalow, which is basically a bungalow with the basement most of the way out of the ground. The garage is half of the basement, about 600 sq. ft. The ceiling is only seven feet high and any time I use paint or solvents you can smell them through the entire house (not good). I have the garage to myself during spring, summer and fall, but have to share half of it with the wife's car during the winter. So long as she's bringing in a wage, what the hey!

Here's one for ya - I have a friend (big time drag race guy) that has a 40x60 garage that he has the nerve to say he out grew and had to add on a 12x60 addition. Go figure! Jack

I finally moved off campus this year, so my garage consists of a parking space out back of the condo. But back at home, the house is around 4500 sq.ft and the "garage" is 7000 sq.ft with a 750 sq.ft apartment inside if it gets too late to walk back to the house after wrenching on the cars. :icon996:

I have a 1900 sf house and a 700 sf garage and I needed more space so I built a 150 sf shed for garden stuff, car parts, and my 60 gallon air compressor. Trust me it's nice not to hear the compressor run when I'm working in the shop!! One day I'll have a lot more space but for now I'm very happy. :)

I am in the process of trying to build a house now but dealing with the VA what a headache. If it all falls through I think I've got the wife talked into a chunk of land and a 50X100 Morton building.

4,000 sq. ft shop with a 3,000 Sq ft. partial underground house. Our shop is used for farm equipment, hunting and fishing, fabricating. Very versatile-sometimes a pain. We are starting on another barn in 1 week, estimated 4500-5,000sq ft. used for a place to store all our horse trailers/ farm equipment and all my projects I am buying.

We are using bridge "I" beams to frame the barn, my dad is a bridge contractor so it will be braced so you could drive a truck over it.
I always wanted to build a shop w/ an apartment over it. That way I can be on my farm while my house is getting built, still have a place to store my cars and after I complete and move into my house then it can switched into a in-laws house!

I design kitchens (and an occasional garage) for some pretty expensive homes around Orlando. Everytime I see a four car garage with two cars in it and not much else it disappoints me to go home and look at my 2 car garage that's only 18' deep. At least when we're not having hurricanes I can park the Jeep outside and have a little room to work. One garage that I went to look at for a possible redesign was a four car with lifts in two of the bays storing 3 - 60's Vettes and a Chevy SSR and that wasn't even one of the pro athletes.

2700 Sq. ft, 5 bedroom, 2 bathroom house, pool, jakoozi in living room(sp). Not needed, but nice for Wisconsin winters!! 3 car 1800 sq. ft. detached garage, LP heat, full above attic for parts storage! Not bad for 24 years old! Very lucky, I call it!

I am so julious. I don't have anything. All my cars park in the parking lot. I don't even have a place to really work on anything. Plus my Apt is about 50ft from my cars so power is a problem too.

I have to say I wish I had some of the shops shown. My current storage/shop is in a less that ideal configuation. It's a L shape. The long width is 12' X 40' with a 15' X 15' leg(limited by lot size). It's better than nothing. It currently has no heat but I'm looking into that :fingersx: . I had my appendix(sp?) out and the medical bills ate up my play money :seizure: .

73novaguy,

The banshee is a 4 mil stroker with 16/1 compression! A definite thrill ride. The Honda 400EX is my wife's bike. Both are only ridden in the sand with the banshee sporting lot's of chrome and polished aluminum. Custom painted plastic is in the plans for this winter if I can find time away from the Camaro:) The newest addition to the shop is a Lincoln 180 Tig welder which has been on my wish list for a LONG time. I will try to post some pics of the camaro project this week.

Yes I think we are all very lucky to have these wondeful machines and to those who have nicer garages, very lucky! Wether or not you have got a gigantic shop or none at all. We are all out here to do one thing and that is to work on the cars we all love so much.

Sorry to you guys who are saying "What the heck is he doing posting replies in this column about that!" But don't know how to switch it over to a new one.

San Dan, I love the banshee. I am definately a Yamaha guy down to the core. I used to race quads in motocross, but a broken (3 places)femur sticken out the front of my leg and a bunch of broken out teeth slowed me down abit. So now I race motocross on a dirtbike in the pro class. hahaha Not that is is any safer! I live in a very sandy area of Wisconsin so I know what it is like to get out and have some fun throwin sand around! Very nice shop also Dan! I am in the process of insulating, sheet rocking, mudding, texture painting, painting, and heating my garage! About 85% done, but will be 95% done over the Thanksgiving weekend!

2000 sqft with 2 car attached garage and a 12 x 40 storage unit a mile away. Doesn't have to be heated here in Houston, Tx. I've always been able to leave the wife's car in the driveway for extra space while wrenching on the Firebird. Hmmmm there was a 6 month stint when the car stayed in the driveway as the shell of the bird was in the middle of the 2 car garage and parts scattered on both sides.

I'm moving in February to a 3900sqft house with a 3.5 car detached garage. Should be nice to have more room.

40X60 garage (2400 sq ft.).....1400 sq. ft house.
2400/1400= 1.7 sqft of garage/sq ft of house.
I told my wife I wanted to start a company...that hasn't happened yet but my Camaro has the coolest digs in town...

Well my shop sold me on my house. We rolled into the driveway and I just drove right to the shop..House? What house?

House = 1100sqf

Shop = 1008sqf (24x42) + 16x42 Carport (Soon to be an enclosed an additional 642sqf)

Also has an additonal 30'x18' Carport behind the shop.

As long as I keep the wife happy we're doin good!
2 additions on the house are coming in the spring and late summer. 16x20 addition and 24x12. I think after that I'll be in good standings for quite a while.:icon996:

This thread is great. I've been looking for a house to buy when I move closer to Orlando to transfer schools after the summer. The garage is the first thing I check. The house always comes second. I wish we had barns like they do up north, there just isn't enough workspace down here without building a shop.
