First let me start off by saying I'm so lucky to have found this site. I'm totally hooked on the Pro-touring theme. My 70 SS Camaro is starting to take shape. Originally a 4-spd car. Now I'm trying to decide between the D&D Viper/GM or the new TKO-600. I'm running a 3.73 rear with a 275/40/17. One day those 315's will tuck up under. From what I've read and researched, both are fine outstanding choice's. I do plan to do a little parking lot racing with the car. I'm not going too wild with this one. So I'm here asking the "Pro-touring Gods" for advice and guidance. :worship:

I have talked to a few trans sellers. The TKO is pretty strong and is being used in applications well north of 600TQ. The 6 speed is more money, and not as strong. Unless it is important to have a "6 speed", the TKO is the way to go. It is also smaller and lighter.

You may want to take alook at www.ClassicChevy5Speed.com for information about a complete TKO600 kit for your 70 Camaro. Check out the TKO600 installation write up for my 70 Camaro to see what involved: http://www.classicchevy5speed.com/tremec_transmission_1970_camaro_wu.htm.
For the reasons that ProdigyCustoms gave, I think he hit the nail on the head about why the TKO600 is a great choice.
At this time Classic Chevy 5-Speed happens to have a group purchase going with ProTouring members. See the group purchase forum for details.
Also, feel free to call me to discuss any detailed questions.

70GT,

I just installed a TKO600 (.68 OD) in my 73z with 3.73 rear. In my opinion the extra overdrive gear will do nothing for you if you intend to keep the 3.73s in the rear. Right now my car cruises at 80mph @ 2500rpm. First gear seems just about right also.

If you are running a carb with typical performance mods your rpms will drop too low with the 6th gear ratio. If you were thinking of going to a deeper rear gear later the t56 with stock ratios becomes more viable.

Take care,
Shane

The TKO is not stronger than the D+D viper modified T56, and if they tell you so ask them why, if they tell you that is because of the # ratings, then they don't know much. The TK0 5/600 is a very stong transmission and is as good as the VIpert T56. It is really about pricing/work. You will have to modify the tunnel to fit the T56, if not it will be VERY tight, the TKO may need some tunnel surgery but more lilkely than not.

No tunnel surgery needed for the TKO in a second gen.
