I wanted to take some time and put a few details about my car up if any one is interested in info let me know. I love to talk about my car J I have had the car since 1981 between my sophomore and junior year of high school. It started life as a 350 2bbl 2 speed with open rear end. It was the lovely vedoro green with black interior. In 1990 I pulled the engine to freshen it and some how it turned into a 5 year full on restoration. A few years later as it was resting in my pole shed my then 5 and 6 year old nephews decided to see if they could hit the inside of the shed roof with rocks and rail road spikes. I will never forget walking into the shed and noticing marks on my car cover. I pulled it back to find several big dents and chips in my mirror like black paint job. I had it fixed but it never quite looked the same. I did not learn anything from the first time it decided to “freshen” the car up and 2 years ago I pulled off the front clip so I could redo some details on the subframe and engine and beef the engine up somewhat. One again it turned into a full on complete rebuild of the entire car. I am out of time for now but I will continue the saga later on. here is apic from the 1980s "glory days" I hope my son does not do he same things in his car that I did in this one

It beautiful. What color blue is that?
Steve Firebird

The body is a color they used on the Dodge Vipers. The body man calls it viper blue. The frame is a 1998 jag color minus the metalic.

Steve,
Thanks for the compliments. I chose a 2004 Nissan 350ZX Blue. I think the color is called Blue Pearl. From everything I've heard, the TKO will make the car much more driveable. Kettering is just 20 miles south of the Dayton Airport where the National Firebird and TA show is every year. If you are down this way for that or any other reason, I'd love to show you the car. I may even have it streetworthy by then:)

Your car is close the the color I picked out at first as well. I was looking at the blue you see on the turbo PT crusier and the subaru WRX blue also. The body guy showed me the Viper blue and I said go for it. It has a huge amount of flake in it but they are small. The car changes color alot in different lighting. I have been to the TA Nats twice. I had my 68 there in 2003 when it was black and I rode with a friend in 2004 in his 68 convert 400 HO. It was a good time. I was hoping to have my car ready for this summer but since it's 2 years behind right now I am not getting my hopes up untill it's back home and in my control. If I am going to the TA nats this year I will drop you a line for sure.

Brian it was from Covan but I got it through performance years for 120.00. I have a vintage air heater/ defroster behind the dash and wanted some thing to cover the center section. I would give anyone thinking about buying it a word of warning. I had to cut the radio bezel to install the lower gauges not a big deal to me but some people won’t want to. I also had to come up with a way to mount it since nothing is supplied and no instruction came with it.

You may remember my friends car it was a April gold 68 drop top with black roof and interior a nice stock car. That sounds like something I would complain about. I never did like the stock seats in those first gens and the polyurathane bushing every where make it ride like a truck but it handles pretty well. I got some 73 TA deluxe seats to put in it so hopeful that will help make it better on long trips. SOMEDAY I want to upgrade to an air ride type suspention. Here is a picture of the new seats I still need to modify the brackets some how they set too high and tip a little.

Yeah we probably met. I remember you complaining about the car having polyurethane everywhere. I'm glad you did because it caused me to be very judicious in the use of poly on my car.
I think the seats will look great. I almost went with those myself but am going to try to have some '69 headrest seats contoured to provide more support.

I am using it for a driver untill my 68 is back on the road or if I can sell it I could use the money for more goodies on the 68. BTW where are you from? I have a bunch of parts from 76-79 firebirds I got from the guy I bought the TA from. Let me know if you need anything. Steve

Wow Steve, that is a pretty damn clean TA. Mine currently has a 403/th350 in it. Other than that it is pretty much Identical to yours. I was pretty excited when I found mine it doesnt have a dent in the body that I have been able to find, and I havent found any bondo either. The paint is faded is all.
I am from Montana, I live just 24 miles outside of Bozeman. I think at the moment im good for parts, the only thing on my car that is going to be original when im done is the sheetmetal. :D I think the 455/4L80E install is going to make it pretty wild.
I am a member of a car club here, I will poke around and see if anyone might be interested in your 79 there, If I didnt have 5 cars of my own right now id take a serious look at taking it off your hands, but the last thing I need is more stuff to work on.

Thanks I really like the color too I was a little worried untill I actually saw it on the car. It should be a real eye catcher if I can ever get it back on the road. Spring is here and I am getting the itch to drive but the body shop has made all most 0 progress on it since I took it back to them. I think I am going to call and JACK THEM UP today:banghead:

I went to the body shop yesterday and it was the last straw. The car is two years passed the completion date and in the last month he has managed to wet sand the deck lid and make up the release for the remote trunk. My wife and I talked it over and I am pulling the car from him this weekend if the weather is OK. I have an other body shop lined up to finish the project and I know he will follow through on his word. I am sure this move will cost me some extra $$$ but I do not want to go an other summer with out the car. Wish me luck !

  Went and moved my car to the new body shop yesterday. When I opened the door at the old body shop I expected the car to be ready to go and to have my parts at least near the car. I should have know better. A Mustang was between my car and the door and my parts were all over the shop in three different rooms. I took me an hour to find most the parts and a few things were MIA. I had to push my car into a corner roll the mustang ahead then jack up the rear end of my Firebird and drag it over so I could get it to the door. To say the least I was angry but I should have know better its just par for the course at this place. It took me from 2:00pm till 8:00pm to get it all loaded and moved to the new shop 3 trips by my self. I did get in touch with the old body man and he was able to find the rest of my parts so I can get them. I paid for the enough paint to do the whole car but the hood inner fenderwells cowl and lower valance had no paint on them and there is about 1 pt of paint left over. Should 2 gal of paint been enough to paint the car? Now I am VERY worried about getting the paint on the hood to mach the rest of the car. ANYWAY thats my last rant about the old body shop I am sure the new guys will do a great job. I have had them do work for me before and I should have had them on this project from the get go.

I stopped in to check the progress on the old bird Friday and the owner of the shop met me at the door and said we need to talk. We went and looked over the car and found some very troubling problems. There are 5-6 spots on the car that the paint is pulling away from the body. He said it is some thing that may continue to show up in more areas or it may just end up being those spots. Then we looked at the fenders and doors. By the time they had worked out some of but not all of the orange peel they started to burn though the paint on some spots. The tool the use to measure (paint micrometer?) showed the paint thickness to be all over the place. Some areas were pretty thick others very thin. The paint also never seemed to dry even though it has been on the car since October the sandpaper was gumming up as they started blocking out so they could make it strait and spray again. So it was expanded to me like this. Something is wrong with the paint and or the sealer used on the car. It’s bubbling / pulling away from the body and seems like it will not dry or get hard. The long and short of it is the car will be taken down to bear metal and repainted the right way. It sucks and I was pretty upset for a while but I can’t stop now and must finish the project. At least now it will be done the right way.

Thats how I felt also! If you had let the paint job stay, 1-2 years later you would be back to redo the whole car anyways and end up paying for two total paint jobs. This way before you car hits the road it will be correct. My 2nd paint job on my car came out golden. Top of the line paint job!

I stoped at the shop this week and they are making good progress. The fenders doors and valance are down to bear metal and one fender was in primer. I am very happy I switched shops. They still need to strip and prime the shell and then they are going to hang all the sheet metal to see how it fits and to get my super 400 hood put on right before they go any farther. I can feel the excitment coming back for this project.

Well progress has stoped for a while one of the guys working on my car just had to have his gall bladder removed and then he is getting married on May 20th and going on a 2 week honey moon. The guy I took the car way from sent me a message that he had a stoke after I moved the car. This is crazy. Maybe I should name the project King Tut. Relax on this one. It still takes 3 months to 1 year for a car to be painted and sent back to you. Add another year for you to put it back together.
Look at it this way, the bodyshop is just allowing the patch/primer/paint to set properly R.P.

I will tell you from experience, if you do replace a panel and use filler over it. If you don't wait a pretty good while before you do your final blocking and paint application, the filler will shrink and you will be ale to see the line where the weld is after a few months. My GTO got a new quarter, it took like 3 months to get the car back from the time I took it to him. It was super slick when I got it back. After a few months, I began to be able to see where the weld line was if I looked at just the right angle. It has been painted now for about 16 years and hasn't gotten any worse. I guess we just didn't allow the filler to fully cure out before painting.

I have not updated for a while. Not much going on to speak of. They found a lot of messed up body work under the messed up paint. The work on smoothing the car had to all be redone. Emblem holes where not welded shut but had bondo in them the gas tank door hole patch was only tacked in place and covered with bondo the trunk key hole had a piece of metal glued in and then covered and the job on smoothing the door handles was awful. I thank the stars above I did not let him have it any longer. Anyway all the messed up body work has been repaired and the doors and fenders have been primed and cut in. They have started on the shell but had o stop for a while because the "bread and butter" jobs started to poor in the door. I am finally getting caught up at work so I am going to bring the doors home and reinstall the glass and try to get the shaved door handle solenoids in and working. Wish me luck hopefully that’s not too screwed up. BTW the poor guy doing most of the body work on "Jinx" was just in the hospital again with a staff infection. What are the odds? So far the list of problems guys working on the car have had is up to 1 heart attack, 2 stroke, 3 gallbladder removed and 4 staff infection that truly almost killed the guy. The doc said if he would have waited 24 more hours to go to the emergency room he may not have made it.

The 2nd body shop ended up getting too busy to finish the bird so I moved it to the 3rd and last shop this week. The new shop only does restorations and hot rods so I won’t be pushed aside by insurance work. It took 100 hours to repair the mess that the first guy left me but now that is all behind me. I happened to catch the new shop as they where just finishing a project and they were able to take my car before the schedule filled back up for the fall. Looks like they will be able to start on it right a way and since there is no really heavy body work left it might move along pretty well. He actually seemed excited to work on the car and likes the direction I am going with it since he is a hot rodder from way back. I have seen a lot of his work over the years and have had friend use him and they have all been very happy. Wish me luck 3rd time is the charm. Once I start to see some progress I will start posting pictures again.

You guys don't miss much! The green one is a GTO hood. The black one has a slight bow in it and by the time I paid the body shop to strip it ,weld up the emblem holes and get it into shape I figured I would have as much in it as the repo hood cost me. I also have some good memorys of the car when it was black and I think it is a awsome keep sake. You know like a picture or something.

I had it mini tubded and a G-Bar 4 link installed and picked up some new rims. I have to wire up the brake lights get the exhaust installed and them put the rest of the interior in it and i should be on the road again. Here are a few pictures.

I may install my old exhaust just so I can start driving it. Here is a picture Kurt sent me after the mini tub and four link install at his shop.

Here is a quick up date. I took the Firebird to Ring Brothers today to get the exhaust built. Hopefully they can get the exhaust built and back from the place that is doing the ceramic coating by the first of next week. Mike took a lot of time working with me to make sure we where both on the same page with what they were going to do for the exhaust.
I did get to visit with to Mike and Jim a little and got to take a peek at Razor. I had my 13 year old son Clayton along and both Mike and Jim took time to introduce them selves and shake his hand. I have known them for a long time and they are just the same nice guys they were way back when I first met them. My son was pretty excited after he saw Razor (as was I) what an unbelievable car.
The shop recovering my rear set said I should be able to pick it up Friday.
I am starting to get excided again about the car. For a while there it seemed like it would never get done and was just pure force of will that keep me plugging away at it. Working with Kurt Anderson from AutoKraft and now Mike & Jim sure seem to make life easier.
I will get some pictures of the exhaust and interior when I get it back home and post them. Steve

I got the car back from the Ring Brothers with the new exhaust installed. It has RARE ram are exhaust manifolds and an ovalized tubing X-pipe , Flowmaster mufflers and they custom built the tailpipes to work with the 4-link. Then it was sent out for ceramic coating and reinstalled. I decided that the fuel lines need to be redone so I have steel tubing and a tubing bender ordered so wish me luck with that project. I need to get this car done since i am registered for the TA nationals in Dayton on the 22nd and the ProTouring event in Sept. here are a few pictures of the system. Steve

I have been trashing on the Firebird for a couple of weeks when I had the time and I think its going to be ready and drivable for the Run Through The Hills event. I had to work a few nights past midnight and I took 3 days off work. It was not ready for the TA Nationals so I stayed home and worked on the car those days. I have about 200 miles on it now and I am pretty happy with it. I think I shocked a sport bike today leaving a stop light. I hung with him till about 60 and he started to pull away so I lifted. Although he may not have been trying very hard at first,:drive1: it was fun for me. I can't wait for the 1/8 mile drag at RTTH. I have never been on a track before it should be a learning experiance for me and a blast. I just replaced the worn out manual steering box last night/this morning with one from Lee and man what a difference. It takes some shoulders and arms to muscle it around the twistys but the car finally does what its told. The 4 link is working great and the car really seems hook up much better than before and it rides and drive great(for a 68). If I don't break it before Sept 10th I should be on my way to TN. here are a few pictures. I still need to clean it up and bolt on a few things but this is pretty close to the finished product.

I had the call outs put on the firebird today here are a few pictures. I still need to get the fender bird, firebird script and the 1/4 louvers on it but I like it so far. It gets called a Camaro too much with out the bird emblems.

nice looking car. I have a 68 of my own that I hope to begin working on again soon. Nice to see your progress, as it motivates me. Where you located in Ohio? I have family and friend's in Lebanon, and Middletown. I also know Doug Jarnigan from that area, who is a Pontiac collector.

Steve it is looking sweet. Is that a lincoln Mk fan on your radiator? looks like a good job installing it.

Good eye. That is a fan from a Mark VIII lincoln. It works very well moves a lot of air. I had the shroud made by the same guy that made the radiator so I can't take too much credit for it.
