A buddy of mine has a '68 Camaro with a 8.5" 10 bolt under it. He is going to sell it due to putting over 600hp through the drivetrain (he mainly drag races). It is in good condition with a Muncie posi 4:10 unit. Stop axles as far as my knowledge.

I feel this would hold up just fine for my project and plan on buying it from him. My setup is also a '68 Camaro and I don't expect motor output to be anymore than 450hp tops. Plan on doing a LS1 convert and maybe a blower. So realistically around 400hp. Curious to hear some of your thoughts on this, what do you guys think? I can get it for around $500. Anything else I should look for?

Thanks in advance!

if the 8.5 is built right its a pretty stout set up. had an 8.5 under a 71 camaro drag car solid crush sleeve, spool, aftermarket axles took all the beating i could dish out, sold the car and the new owner has been brakcet racing every week for 2 yrs on it with no trouble.

Yes, imo the 8.5 is a very strong rearend when setup right. I have a friend running 9.4 @ 136 in the 1/4. 3000# car, about 1000 hp.
$500 is a good price.
Did this 8.5 come out of a 71-74 Nova?

Not sure what year it is but it did come out of a Nova ('68-'72 I believe??)

i ran a nova 8.5 in my 69 for a year before i had a 9" made for it, worked great, theres a little difference in width but not much, measure carefully for wheels.
the 71 camaro i referred to above was an 11 sec flat on motor low 10's nitrous and came out of the hole with the wheels up, so they will hold up.

I have an 8.5" rr in my 1968. It pushes the wheels out about 3/4" on each side.
You can run a wheel with a 5.5" backspace or 4.5" backspace so long as you keep it under 275mm wide.
It holds up to plenty of beatings. I will bet I have around 1000 beatings on it since 1990, and I am just now in the process of replacing the spider gears and cross pin as we speak since they have begun to gall. See pics in my other post in this section.
I had to buy a crud rear end for $200 to get the replacement spiders since you cannot readily buy them any longer for 28 spline axles, but I would say $500 is a good price...you can use your stock backing plates/drums....so all you really have to do is pull the axles from each during the swap without having to remove your brake lines...

Sounds like I'd want something closer to a 6" BS wheel on the rear if it's a wider rear. Seems most are using 5.5 BS wheels on std camaro rears?
