View Full Version : Has anyone successfully done a LS1 rear swap on a 69 Camaro?

Has anyone done this swap?

Two left calipers/backing plates.

I would like to chat with someone who has done it.

It seems to be a pain due to the parking brake.

Should I just buy the Touring Classic rear set up and use my LS1 front conversion?

I did mine in about two and a half hours, but I haven't messed with the E brake yet.

Brickyard, I just finished up mine. E-brake and all. If you want to discuss what I encountered, PM me with your phone # and I will call you.

with this rear swap with 2 lh calipers brakets and mounting plates does it matter if you get it off a 98+ camaro with a 10 bolt and want to put it on a 69 with a 12 bolt?

No, the bolt pattern on the end of the housing is the same.

sweet where can i get the templet to make the front braket that is ..."to size" so i can just trace it and cut it out in metal....or the cheapest place to buy it

sorry to hijack, but for a '67, does the (2) LH brackets still apply, seeing as the shocks are not staggered?

On my website you can find info about the swap.

Thanks, Jan. Great info. I'm guessing you re-drilled and countersunk the caliper brackets 45 degrees out?
thx in advance

Just to be clear, it looks as though Jan did an LT1 brake swap, not LS1. There are differences.

I noticed. Looks like i'm going to buy the entire rear brake setup, and take it from there. Drilling and countersinking, making brackets, etc, will be easy. I work in a CNC shop :)
thx, end hijack.

I mocked the brakes up on my car. The issue I was running into was that the leaf spring would interfere with the operation of the e-brake. Has anyone been able to figure this out? The only solution I see is to rotate the housing ends 180* so the e-brake pull is on top. This would only work if you are planning on a new housing or modifying the one you have though.

I am in the process of doing this swap also. I am going to mount the shocks inboard so I won't have the caliper/shock interference. But, what I was wondering is can the calipers be mounted to the rear of the axle instead of the front, so that the e-brake lever on the backing plate operates by being pulled toward the front of the car. By swapping the backing plates and calipers side to side, left to right and right to left. They bolt up to the housing no problem? Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

I've done the LS1 rear brake conversion including functioning ebrake on my '68 with staggered shocks- which should mean that the conversion would be effectively the same as on a '69 (I think)

I however, was not able to use the brackets used on the end of the housing that the old drums mounted up to. I cut the old ones off and made new ones (using the LS1 ebrake backing plate as my template). When welding the new brackets on you need to be mindful of:

Clocking the brackets such that they don't interfere with the shocks (I was able to use a the right and left side parts without any problems) as well as being able to use the ebrakes; and
setting the the bracket deep enough such that the caliper will be positined appropriately in relation to the rotor once it is bolted on the to the axel but not so deep that you can't move the axle inward enought to install or remove the c-clips.Note also that I used C5 rear rotors and am not sure whether they are different from the ls1 rear rotors.

Is there any way you could post a few pictures, I know that there are alot of people trying to do this including myself. They would very appreciated.

I quit being cheap and I did finally did the right thing,
I bought a rear set up from Touring Classics.

Noel was great. I wish I had just done this in the first place.

I looked through my pictures and didn't find the ones of the rear brakes- I have no idea what happened to them. I will try to take pictures within the next week and get them posted.

Sorry for the delay (pics were on my old computer and forgot about them).

Not sure if anyone is still interested in these, but here are pics of the mounting brackets, backing plates, e-brake line bracket and e-brake handle.

I did it on my 69 bird , no e- brake yet - rear end not in car , i used stock left and right, since I am mini-tubbing shocks are inbord now- easy bolt up and classic tube brake lines -the braided reinforced ones , wish my bodyman would geterdun so I can install rear and engine /trans - I'm jones-ing to make some progress on it

I used left and right side also, without a mini-tub. Because you're welding the brackets on (instead of using the stock brackets like the LT1 set up) you can clock them such that both sides will be compatible (ie not interfering with the shock).

TTT....

Does anyone have a parts list for this setup?

I have the BRP rear brackets on the way and would like to know what other parts to buy.

I am pretty sure that I will need 2 LH backing plates and 2 LH calipers to make everything work. Are my assumptions correct?

THanks,
Chris
