Last night my fiance and I went to see the legendary punk band, X.

DJ Bonebreak

The show was at Slim's in San Francisco...more great punk shows in there than you can count.

At one point during the show I looked to my right and there stood Jello Biafra and on the left, Steve Caballero.

1/2 way through the show Bonebreak busted the head on his kick-drum and some kid that was helping out back stage schlepped out a drum from his own kit to help. That kid......Billy Joe from Greenday.

A little later on I wound up at the bar next to Lars Fredrickson and Matt Freeman.

Wholy Moly what a night.

X was in fine form, Xcene was great...first time Ive seen her sober. Pretty cool!

Thought the old punks would enjoy hearing about it.

That is a killer story... You know, I mention bands like X or blackflag or Social D or Bad Brains to my students (I TA music theory courses at University of Washington), and even the "punk" students glaze over with no understanding. Just sad.

I'm one of the leftover punks from the old days. I have just about all my stuff on my Ipod. I never got much into X or the pre-hardcore stuff, although I love the Ramones and the pre 80's Clash stuff. I'm more of an east coast/midwest fan. The only bands from out west I listened to were Fear, Black Flag(henry rollins stuff), Youth Brigade(BYO records), 7 Seconds (one of my favorites), Dead Kennedy's, Social D. For the most part I'm pretty heavy into Minor Threat, Negative Approach, The Necros, SS Decontrol, Bad Brains, SOA, Iron Cross, Government Issue, Void.

I'd give anything to go back in time and see Minor Threat at the 9:30 club in DC.

Wasn't Billy Idol with X for a time? Or am I thinking of Generation X?

By the way...did anyone read the Sex Pistols response to being inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame? Classic Sex Pistols. That was SOOO punk rock. Here's the link to it. (http://www.thefilthandthefury.co.uk/)

That's what I love about the old punks. Alot of them still live by the same credo. Guys like Biafra, Ving, McKaye, Stern Bros, Rollins, Seconds, Rotten, Ness....those guys will die Punk.

I can believe that about Ving. You have to remember, the guy was already old when his band got big in the 80's. He was 30 years old in 1980 and he's 56 now.

Sounds like a mega-kickass show. Too bad I live 2500 miles away and we're lucky if Social D shows up. We're usually screwed with the "mall punk" crap like those other bands mentioned by Damn True and 6-9/69. The Cleveland music scene sucks.

I was actually reading in esquire (reformed punker I guess) that Viggo Mortenson (the guy from Lord of the Rings) was married to Xcene. Tripped me out, but made him cool in my book.

I've gotten to see a lot of great bands considering I'm only 25 (about 10-15years too late), but seeing DH Pellegro with another band (drummer from DK), Jello Biafra sing, TSOL, Fear, NoFX, No use for a name, no means no, DRI, DI, etc.

Very cool man, thanks for making me jealous.

Funny ... I went from punk to metal and never let go of either one. Hell, I didn't hear a Beethoven piece properly (i.e. not in a commercial or movie) until I was nearly 20 years old. Now, when I'm talking about the likes of Beethoven, Vivaldi, Stockhausen, or Xenakis, I make comparisons to punk, rock, and metal. Thank goodness for an older brother who gave me a proper music education before I went to music school!

BTW, nearly 20 years later, and I've still got my same '70 Mach. :headbang:

I am of the (uneducated) opinion that Orion by Metallica is actually a decent piece of music.

I've been through probably 10 other cars and trucks through the years, but I never have and never will let loose of my Camaro.

"Pop" punk like blink 182, GC, etc. is a black eye to the true punk bands. There aren't many good "new" punk bands around these days, most harder bands are either metal or hardcore (or some form of it metalcore, post hardcore, etc.). Rise Against is the best new punk band out there, in my opinion. They've started to get some limited radio play recently with their 3rd CD, but pretty much it's all underground stuff. Some of you older punks might enjoy 'em; they're out of Chicago.

This thread got me to go dig out what I had left of my punk vinyl... I apparently got rid of all my old cassettes, which was the majority of my punk collection, but I did just finish listening to some DRI, Suicidal Tendencies, and PIL (though I don't think we can really call that punk). Good stuff.

This thread got me thinking about the old days. I just dug out my Clash vinyl. Have most of it on CD now, but not Sandinista, the double album. I don't even have a record player any more. Guess I will just look at the album some more. I'm trying to remember seeing some of the bands mentioned above (DK Youth Brigade etc.)when I lived in Tucson in the 80's. Memories aren't all that clear. Wonder why that is? Taste in music has changed alittle over the years, or at least broadened. Saw the Rev. Horton Heat last Sat., Pretty damn good show.

haha that may be sooner than later. They played at the White Buffalo in Loveland. I think they were at the Aggie Theater in Ft. Collins the Sunday before.
