View Full Version : Ignition Switch Problem

I have recently replaced the steering column with a rebuilt tilt column in my 69 Camaro. I have also replaced the 4-speed transmisson with a 5-speed Tremec from Keisler Engineering. Now, the ignition switch seems to have problems. When it is in the "off" position, and you can remove the key, the accessories stay on. When it is on the "accessories on" position (furthest counter-clockwise position) no juice - and the key is locked-in-place as it should be. Where did I go wrong?

Check the actual ignition switch on the lower section of the column. Some of these have slotted holes where they mount which allows for minute adjustment back and fourth to get the actuating positions right with the key position. I may be wrong but I just rebuilt my own tilt column and this was the case when I mounted the lower switch.The one that has a rod between it and the key rack.

What he said.................because GM's columns are all mechanical they have provided lots of adjustmens for things like the Ignition Switch, Neutral Safety, Dimmer etc. No 2 GM cars are the same.

It's always good to take the column apart as well and clean it out, who knows where it's been or what it's been thru. Regrease everything and get all the dirt out of it. It's a good time to check the wiring for your turn signals too, some columns had serious issues with "breaking" the wires at the tilt pivot point over time and that can lead to all kinds of issues....
