Howdy all. I have (had) a 1970 Imperial that i got on eBay for $1900 (i overpaid...) Anyway. I live in Cathedral City, CA, just adjacent to Palm Springs. This car was in the street in front of my house, and a few days ago the meter maid chalked the tires and left a tag on it. I washed off the chalk and rolled it forward a few feet. Today I came home and checked my messages, and my neighbor had called to tell me the cops towed my car away. Silly me didn't notice it was gone... so i call the cops and it was towed for expired tags. so, yes i had expired tags. i usually keep the car in my driveway, but my neighbor is building a damn brick wall so i had it in the street.
At this point, i'm almost relieved it's gone, cause it was a pos, the brakes were broken, it barely ran, and just last week when i moved it something shorted out and the electrics went dead. but it was perfectly straight and had a 440.
HOWEVER... i'm supremly irate at the nerve of the local law to screw with me like this. My house is in sort of a garbage neighborhood that has a bad inferioity complex to the neighboring towns and sees overzealous 'code enforcement' as appropriate. My 65 Tempest got a parking ticket IN THE FU*KING DRIVEWAY for being 'abandoned or inoperable' when the car was completely functional. When i bought the house it was a dump with a goat living in the backyard. I fixed it up damn nice. I reappraised it and bought a Z06. Along the way though I got tons of citations from the city for brown damn grass the christmas lights, construction debris, cars parked 'poorly'. whatever. i got a letter from anonymous neighbor telling my my house looked like sh*t and 'are drugs a problem?'. yes bitch drugs are a problem, i'm a licensed pharmacist and medicare part D isn;t paying me enough.
People routinely double or triple the 25mph speed limit down my street. One neighbor has lost 2 mailboxes due to wayward cars, another had his parked car sideswiped by 3 drunken illegal immigrants. I know there's goats hiding somewhere. although, i could care less if somebody has a goat, or an old car at their house, or a pink flamingos and rainbow flags. i really feel that the fuzz and the city council could do better things than tow my damn mopar. so chickensh too... never a knock at my door, just certified letters and notices to abate. at least the big Imperial was good looking and a barricade for my kid in the front yard against the traffic.
at this point, i'm over paying fines fees and wasting my time and breath on the cops. my car got stolen. i'm writing my congressman. what the hell should i do??

buy two sizes larger underwear the next time..yours are pinching your cods and making you crazy..I think the goat will also help..keeps your grass cut and the other fringe benefits will lessen the tension you're under..take an aspirin and write again tomorrow..chase down that goat..even if you don't catch it, the exercise will help you cope better

MAYBE A TRAILER PARK WOULD BE MORE APROPOS. THEN YOU WON'T GET ALL THESE COMPLAINTS..YOU COULD CALL YOUR CAR YARD ART THEN..I DIG YOUR CHRISTMAS LIGHTS YOU STILL HAVE ATTACHED. DO YOU STILL BURN THEM AT NIGHT?

move to Arkansas or Missouri. You can park your cars in your front yard, leave your X-mas lights up year around, fence your goats in the front yard to keep the grass mowed or burn the yard with diesel so you don't have to deal with it!
I a serious note, sorry to hear about your car.

One word, MOVE
I know, easier said than done, but you live in the wrong neighborhood to be a car guy it sounds. You can argue until you are blue in the face, and have a heart attack, but you will not beat City Hall. That same SOB that is speeding down the road is probably the one that called in and reported your "abandoned" car. Probably worth the effort to get a tag and insurance in the mean time. As long as it will move under its own power, and you do move it weekly, I have a hard time thinking they could enforce any law. Sounds like the best thing you could do would be to get very friendly with the Captain that oversees your area, or maybe your local commissioner. You have to play with them, not fight them. Remember, that meter maid is the low man on the totem pole, just a grunt. Be nice to their boss and they will go away...

"garbage neighorbood"!?!? LOL!! I am with Andrew on this one! Literally! I am in MO (but don't have any goats, that is Arkansas! LOL!)
That sucks, I would prolly call 'em and see exactly what violation it was and see if it was a real violation. Then talk to an attourney about harassment possibly.

Goats in Missouri? Heck we midwesterners are above that we use cows and sheep. That way we can use them for food and clothing when the grass quits growing. Now Arkansas ?

well, garbage is maybe a little harsh. by garbage i meant 'inappropriately egotistical'. i'm a pretty humble dude. we could use some more folk from AR or MO around. i was pissed last night. my real question is what took them so long. i knew this would happen, i should have just given the damn car away to someone.
i think i had some tools in the back seat too...
if anybody in southern california, or anywhere, wants to bail the car out, the title is yours. i assume it'll be auctioned or crushed someday.

my guess is you have a jerk for a neighbor somewhere, police ususally dont have the time to drive around looking for stuff like this, unless your particualr town has someone specifically assigned to it. my home town had one for about 2 yrs, always calling me dad when the renters of his properties did something stupid

Same thing happens in my neighborhood, the homes in my area are in the multi-million dollar range, and despite that, I have one a-hole nieghbor who says my cars bring down the 'class' of our neighborhood. Ironically she has a very early T-bird she putts all over the place.
That same neighbor, is the one calling parking enforcement, and threatening that 'she has connections in the city.' 5 parking tickets later... certified letters... my car is in the garage.

Sucks to hear about your car. Would it be worth it for you to go pay the money to spring the car from impound just to pull the 440 (and anything else useful) or is that more trouble than it's worth?
Your story does make me realize how much I love my neighborhood, and more so how much I love my rear driveway and 8 foot tall power sliding gate - if they don't see it, they can't complain about it.

the picture you sent doesn't look like a garbage neighborhood to me..with all due respect, what would the neighborhood look like if just 1/2 of the people there parked an old car in front of their house with no hub caps, expired tags etc. Got to respect your neighbors..

The bottom line is this, not everyone is a car guy, especially the women. Neighborhoods and citys now have covenants against cars just sitting in yards. Some more affuent neighborhoods do not allow any cars sitting outside, even if it is your daily driver. Personally, I could not ever live in such a neighborhood, nor would I even look at one when shopping for a place to live. I am fortunate to live in a place where I can do just about anything, and own enough of the neighborhood now that if the neighbors start bitching, I get new renters....lol
Hopefully this thread will be a learning experience to some when they think about moving. Always know the rules before you sign the contract.
One other thing Colin, just fyi, a 70 imperial is hands down the best demolition derby car I ever had, if you have such events out there, it may be a good way to work out your flustrations with the car, city and everything else. You could still salvage the drivetrain and who know, probably win some of your money invested back.

I parked a dually and enclosed trailer in front of my house at about 8:00 PM and would leave before 7:00 the next morning in the neighborhood I used to live in. One neighbor way down the street complained after the 2nd time I did it. I understood their point. A mans home is usually his largest single investment other than his kids and wife. The increase in value is many times a large part of some people's worth. Letting individuals do what they want many times hurts the rest of the neighborhood. I would never move into a neighborhood without any covenants. You're at everyone's mercy and there's always one screwball in the crowd. I wouldn't want anyone leaving a car parked on the street at all times in my neighborhood. My neighborhood didn't even want you leaving the garage door open unless you were coming in or out..I had no problem with that..the neighborhood looked great. I just had to rent part of a warehouse to keep my stuff which was inconvenient but a mans home is his castle..who wants to live in a dump..Covenants help keep everyone straight..

the thing is, there is no covenant here. the palm springs area has more gated neighborhoods than anywhere i've ever seen. i intentionally avoided that... all i wanted was a place to own where i could plant some damn grapefruit trees and tear apart my pontiac. there's tons of old cars and broke ass houses around here, it's just suprising to say the least how _I_ seem to attract alot of attention.
i'm mulling over the idea of recovering the car and planting it nose first in my front yard, a la the 'cadillac graveyard'. yard art. damnit that was my turbo project. i was planning burnout in front of the house, it's an Imperial, it had a shure-grip!

You were going to put a turbo on that big ol Imperial? It's isn't surprising to me how you draw a lot of attention..you'd be a fun guy to hang with but I would't want you living within a country mile of my house...doing a burnout with a turbo Imperial with a sure grip in front of your house..two big black streaks in the street in front of your house. Sounds like Joe Steinmetz who works for Milton Robson. Milton has a 15 Million dollar house with tire marks all over the place where Joe is out there testing Miltons cars..send some more pix of your neighborhood. The pix you sent made the neighborhood look very good. What's the average price on a house in your neighborhood in the likes of Palm Springs? Did you ever get the grapefruit trees planted?

Oh My God...this is the best read in a long while. Sorry to hear about your car, get that damn thing back...but judging from the picture you posted....it's the mail man you pissed off. Your blocking the mail box. Seriously though, I'd live in your neighborhood, I've lived and worked in worse.
As for the rest of the world...everything the folks are saying about Missouri is true. As a transplant from Wisconsin, I can attest to this. I'm constantly amazed at the inginuety of Missouri folks. (I witnessed a guy pulling a 4 cylinder with his four wheeler with rope thrown over a tree limb. He kept his 300 lb. sweetheart on the 4 wheeler for "traction" as he told her. The motor came out nicely. I still laugh at that one.) A Missouri man is deemed successful by the vast collect of "priceless" tin parked next to, in front of and somtimes in the ditch of his dwelling. I need to take more pictures.
As far a Georgia....You've got them talking goats that lie....lies I tell you!

One of my neibors is like that. He likes to call the code enforcement on me. He tells them all kind of crazy stuff and at least twice a year I got tickets. They were always unfounded or petty. Finally Iwent to the village proved they were all corrected or false. Then I talked to my enforcer and explained the situation. I get no more tickets only a couple of hand typed letters thanking me for keeping things beautiful. He also sends me a heads up when he's coming! My neibor put up a fence and some big tall bushes! I'd be inclined to try a little harder to piss off the neighbors. At this point, they already hate you, so what do you have to lose?
Your neighbors should mind their own damn business.
Try not to break any rules or laws, but anything that is legal, and will piss them off is fair game. If you have some neighbors that you are friendly with, let them know this is what you're doing, and you'll stop as soon as you find out who was doing the bitching, and that person decides to mind their own f%#*ing business.

I bought my first house while I was still single. The guy living next to me was always dragging home junkers, slapping some "mud" on them and selling them. I was cool with that. After all, my buddies and I were parting out and building cars in my driveway.
The following spring, Mud Boy sold his house and moved closer to his job. Some old fart bought the place and moved in. One day towards the end of the summer ( remember what we were doing in my driveway ) the old dude comes over while we're working on my buddies Nova. It wasn't hard to tell he was steamed. He DEMANDED to know who my landlord was! I looked at him and said "My what?" After he repeated himself I informed him that I owned my house. The look on his face was priceless. You'd think I had just punched him in the gut.
Oh yeah, he put the fence up the next week.

I remember when I drove up to look at my house the first time and when I got to the neighborhood I thought to myself, I am not too sure about this side of town? Then when I got to my place it was one of the nicest places in the neighborhood. I then drove around a couple of streets and up and down the one I live on. I saw some nice classic cars in some garages,a few project cars in the front yards and in driveways that will never get started in others, a couple of places they were working on stock cars for the local speedway, and other places that needed repair and some that were immaculate. I bet there are more oxy/acetylene tanks in my neighborhood in 5 squ.blocks than anywhere in the county.
I thought about it for a bit and asked the wife and the boy what they thought and they looked at me and said: what are you waiting for. My garage is as big as my house, my drive is 125' long and enough for a good 60' time trap once the concrete gets put in.
When Jeff Schwartz was here with his Ultima ,a guy in his yard wanted him to lightem up in the street.
I fit right in in my neighborhood, it has low taxes, easy neighbors and the retired couple across the street are the best security you could ever want. They love my car and think it's great to have someone who will help them with their cars and stuff if they need it. I hope they like it when I start to make noise with the Cormaro but the Harley guy's already make more noise than I could.
I figure when I start the car up for the first time I will have an audience made up of the whole neighborhood. So there is a place for everyone if your lucky. I found my place at 9am and by 7pm I was told my offer was accepted. 3 other people were going to buy it but all wanted to go FHA and the owner said no way, so it ended up with me by the luck of one appointment.
Goodluck with your neighbors to all of you and remember to treat them nice before they know you are a car guy. It always helps. The car stuff was the last things I moved to my place :fingersx:

Sorry this is the reason I will NEVER EVER EVEREVER EVER EVER live in California. IT is the closest thing we have to a Socilized state. To think that the local gov can come on to your property and tell u how to park/cut your grass/ up keep on your car.... it is nothing short of rediclious!!

Unfortunately, on the other side of the coin of not having convenants.
My parents had a new neighbor move in next to them. They new neighbors like to buy junk cars and fix them, then sell them. Well the problem is they have about 8 cars at a time, cars in the street, blocking the sidewalk etc. They leave the cars jacked up in the street, a transmission ot two leaking sitting in the driveway, and oil everywhere, street, sidewalk. Very messy people. Looks like a messy junkyard.
All the old neighbors got together and complained to the local code enforcement, whick made them clean up all the cars, but the stains and oil are forever.

i have awesome neighbors, the ones immediately around me at least. for example, to my left live 2 girls (yes, like that...) and one has a '62 Nova that she's having a cage put in right now. and they're good looking. they babysat my kid the other night.
i'll try to take some pictures of the cars around here and post them up. someone behind me has a niiice '70 el camino for sale. it looks like someone's project they're abandoning. the bodywork is all done and it's painted almost that daytona sunset orange metallic c6 color.
my parents live in a covenant controlled commumity in Golden, CO. my dad still has the 71 challenger he bought new, and i wrecked the sh*t out of in 1996. we made it driveable, and he still drives it, but my mom is very ashamed of it. she was also ashamed of her clean 71 lemans, and didn't care that i was 15 and in tears when she 'traded' it in for a new 1992 plymouth voyager, for $350.
there are those that can appreciate a broke ass Imperial for what it is... and those who simply want it hauled off and crushed.
thanks for all your comments and support, and bashing.

You're a hell of a lot of fun man...hope something good happens to you where you can post it up..you take your bashing well and that's a good. Glad you're not my neighbor, because I would want to be pissed at you for your junk car but as likeable as you are I wouldn't be able to. you still didn't answer me if you dispense drugs over the counter at a drug store or at a health care facility. The part about no underwear was a little more info than we needed..

i do drug regimen reviews at about 900 nursing home beds a month, i work in the inpatient pharmacy at the local hospital about 2 days a week, and i'm in the 'float' pool for a retail drug store chain, so i do hand out alot of drugs, as allowed by law.

sounded like you were "floating" for the retail chain when you made your initial post. Man needs to know first hand what he's dishing out..Bet the drug store chain would help pay to get the Imperial back..it'd look good sitting in front of their stores in Palm Springs. Did you share your Imperial story with your patients?

Dude... I used to live in the same place... it's called HELL! Code cops, pissy nose-up bitches for neighbors, bored middle class kids with too much time on their hands, and unsavory (and often questionably legal) people who drive by far too fast or far too slowly (casing your house and cars). Best thing my parents did was sell and move to an acre lot with no zoning restrictions, a private drive, and enough trees (freaking woods really) to never see a neighbor. Sure it was an extra 20 minutes of driving to get anywhere, but totally worth it...

Wow. First off I have to say it is a small world. I live right around the corner from you. I have a 67 lemans in my driveway that is non-opped. I also got a ticket for having a non-opped vehicle parked in public view. It is a stupid ordinance here. I also got a ticket for my grass being dead. I was really mad about that one because at the time, the park, which is on the same street as my house, was completely dead because the city did not have enough money to fix it. I thought it was pretty hypocrytical of them to say my grass had to look good when thiers did not. The code enforcement officer that wrote the ticket for the car watched me washing my truck, and waited till i went inside for a minute to put the ticket on the car. Pretty sleazey. I called him and asked him why he wrote the ticket. He said because the code said it was inoperable. I told him to come over and start it. everything under the hood is new. I explained to him that non-opped does not mean it is inoperable. the only reason it is sitting there is because I haven"t put hand controls and stuff in it. (I am in a wheelchair). Anyway, I sent in pictures and stuff to the city and they voided the ticket. I have lived in both palm springs and here in cathedral city. I like it here much much better. I had way more problems in palm springs. You may want to watch out for them where your trash cans are concerned too. They told me they can"t be visible from the street. Even though they are city property. I saw your tempest and the chrysler you were talking about. What did you do with the tempest? it looked pretty decent. I was just happy to see another pontiac in the nieghborhood. Still it is a small world. LOL. Oh yeah. code enforcement told me if I put a cover on my lemans, they would leave it alone. I think they probably wrote you the ticket because your tempest was parked in the gravel. They tried that when I had mine in the back yard. They said it had to be on a designated parking area.

that"s cool. Yeah mine is covered more to keep the city off my back. It"s not much to look at right now, but it is all original and unmolested. Also, it doesn"t have alot of rust. I don"t plan on keeping it original though. I have just been gathering parts. Keep an eye on that imperial, and don"t let those a$$es from the city take it too. After I posted the above, I saw your post with the pics about your tempest. It looks like it"s coming along great. Now I just have to do something with mine.
