It was cool. I think the announcers didn't know what to do.

It rocked! They pulled last years Ferrari F1 up on a platform even with the main stage and had a pit crew around it (the announcers claimed it was Shumackers (SP?) car last year). It was red with an olympic logo on the side. Once it was even with the main stage the driver fired it off, drove to the middle of the arena and lit'em up. 6-7 donuts later the arena was filled with smoke. Crowed went wild.
Oh, and yes it was planned. It's a little hard to pick up a rental 2005 Ferrari F1 and drive into the olympic opening without it being planned. :)

My wife and I were sitting on the couch, and I was half asleep, until she poked me and said, "Check it out, there's a Ferrari!" I woke right up. Once I saw him pull out into that huge opening on the stage, I was thinking the same thing as StRacer; how could you have access to an F1 car and not wail on it just a bit? :)

That is the difference between 9K rpms and 18K rpms. I absolutely want to go to Indy and see them run one time before that gig is up.
will they only be running at Indy for a limited time?

They only had a 5 year deal I think, and after the fiasco last year with tires, I would not be surprized if it gets canned. I know if I had spent the money to get there, stay there and watch the race last year, and then only 6 cars ran, I would have been pissed as I am sure those that went were. Now, if everyone boycotts the event this year, things will not be good. Even though the FIA refunded the ticket money, and lost their butts doing it, that in no way made things right with the fans.

I don't know about that..stand next to a Nascar, Pro Stock Car, or better yet a Top Fuel or Funny Car. You can actually feel the power in your heart. That massive bass tone is more music to my ears than the schrill screaming of one of those small engines..even though they make more power per inch than the big boys. Listen to a IHRA mountain motor pro stock..whoa..big inches make big sounds..Spin a IHRA pro stocker around there 4 or 5 times you'd blow the first 10 rows out of their seat

Agreed, I've gotten to stand on the starting line for an entire qualifying session of TF, FC and PS pretty cool. The sight, sound & smells were amazing.
I've also been fortunate enough to go to the Australian GP. The sound of an F1 car at 18K rpm is so high pitched, loud and cool in such a different way....it was like somebody grabbed my spine....the hair on my arms was on end for the whole of the first day.
Both cool, but very different.

One of the best places I've found to listen to MANY different types of engines run!
33rd Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races
Mazda Raceway
Laguna Seca, California
August 18-20
Complete with full access to hot pits, if you're in the way they blip the throttle to get your attention, and hard core racing - stand 1/2 way between turn 6 and 7 as they thunder up the hill... Whether it's Sir Jackie in a vintage Elf Tyrle F1 car, a screaming 302 Trans Am car, or a Big Block Can Am car, you'll hear no sweeter music in your ears. Dave P will probably back me up on this one.
I agree with Bob though for the whole Sound, sight, smell and chest pounding feel, there is nothing like standing at the 60 foot mark when a couple of Top Fuel cars beat feet down the track!

As the sticker on the toolbox reads: "I love the smell of NITRO in the morning!" Top fuel and Funny Cars kicks a#$!!
I used to pit for a guy who ran in NASA. He had a '64 Vette. In his class were all kinds of Panteras, Vettes, Camaros, Mustangs, Hondas and Bimmers. Talk about music coming down the front stretch!
All forms of racing are different, but the excitement is still there regardless of venue.

That link is not working for me. Love F1 tech, I stopped following F1 midway through Ferrari dominated years. Pretty tough to beat F1 in terms of engineering excellence but put F1 cars in dirty air and can you say: "NO PASSING"
Curious if that has changed in recent years???

Proposed in 2007(?) the FIA has mandated a rear wing that will remove a lot of the dirty air area behind the car. Basically the wing will be over the rear tires only and the center will be open. They had something about it in one of the latest issues of Racecar Engineering. Didn't look to bad either......
oh ive been around plenty of open header big inch engines. that pounding is awsome for sure. theres just something about F1 cars though. i guess maybe because i only get to hear it on TV. so its not something i can go out into the garage and even come close to copying.
what do you mean by dirty air?

Those pro stock big inch Suzuki's are pretty schrill sounding too..They must be turning 12 or 13K RPM these days..more?

OHHHH Man thanks for fixing that for me Allen!!! I have to wet sand and buff the orange peel, I mean goose bumps off my arms. :hail: I've been to Montreal a few times, watched them run on the island, there is something about that F1 sound that has more soul than James Brown!
Did you see Luca Montezemelo towards the end? Big ole smile, loving every RPM of it. Let's do some simple math: 20,000 RPM/60 = OH MY GOD valvesprings don't work at 333.33 Revs per second!! :worship:

Craig, you wouldn't be able to scan in that pic by any chance? NO big deal if you can't, I will try to find it online. I am glad to see they will try and make a real change. When they went grooved tires and narrowed the cars up it really turned me off. I've always said: clean up the air off the back of the cars, lose some brake and give them big contact patches and you would see Gilles Villeneuve era type racing.
