View Full Version : Smoke from tailpipe after initial start break-in

I just started the engine yesterday after about 4 years since the engine was rebuilt. There was a small power steering pump leak on the return line from the hydroboost, a quick turn on the fitting and that was fixed, no other leaks were noted and we performed the initial break-in to set the rings. When I brought the car home today (about 25 miles from the garage I had her at), I noticed that there was just a bit more smoke on acceleration (white smoke) coming from the pipes than I though would be normal. Any ideas what could be causing this and how to determine if something is wrong? Any help would be appreciated.

rings need to reseat themselves, and the oil seals maybe rotted and leakingdid you just start it or pull the plugs and lube the cylinders with some oil,i alway like to turn the motor over by hand to lube the cyl walls.the rings maybe stuck to pistons and letting blowby.

I had lubed the cylinder walls through the plug ports while the engine was still residing on the engine stand, then before we started the engine we primed the oil pump through the distributor hole until we got oil on the rockers.

Is there any way to tell if the piston rings stuck to the cylinder walls and are letting some oil blow-by without removing the heads?

Thanks for the info.

George (fellow Navy guy)-

Get a leak-down tester; it uses compressed air to fill the cylinder while at TDC (valves closed), and measures the rate of bleed. The auto hobby shop might have one. Pull your radiator cap off when you do the test to see if you get bubbles- that's a head gasket.

Give me a holler if you need help-

comperossion test is the only real way.they might free up again with driving also,i have had that happen the things good

what only is in it,if its synithic drain it add run a conv oil for 3000 miles, synthic make the walls to slick and the rings wont seat.
