I am curious.
For those that are fortunate enough to have completed cars.
How is your car(s) being used?
Trailered to shows only.
Driven to local shows.
Open track events.
Drag strip.
Fair weather week end driver.
Daily driver.
Combinations of the above.
Annual miles driven in your car in a year.
Thanks for your replies.

When its not winter and snowy I drive my car quite a bit. I drive it to all the local car shows. I also drive in parades. Woodward is also a must for me to drive to. I went to the end of Power Tour in 2004 but its too expensive for me to attend an entire power tour. At least a couple times a month I drive it to work during the summer.
A couple years ago it was 0 degrees out and the only vehicle that woudl start was my 69 Camaro so I had to drive it to work. Luckily the roads were clear and I had a heater in it. :)
I also USE the car to get items from home depot or groceries. I just fold down the rear seat and stack everything inside there.
I also take my car to track events like Gingerman Raceway. I have posted videos and pics of the event. There is another one coming up in April. So with that said I drive my car as much as possible. Thats the main reason I probably wont ever have it finished. Its too hard for me to just park the car. Which unfortunately will have to be done some time so I can paint it. I try to work on it during the winter that way I can enjoy it when summer comes. :woot: :3gears: :drive1:

My Mustang is my daily driver and sole means of transportation. It's a good thing I live close to school...I've been on foot for the past couple days since my carburetor is f'ed up. Gotta get a new needle and seat today. :banghead:

My Big Block Camaro is my only car. I drive it everyday. When it rains, my car gets wet. When my car was in project mode, I shared my wifes car for transportation. That sucked.

Drive mine every chance I get, but not anywhere really I just drive to drive. Doesn't make much sense to drive to school being that I live 5 mins away. First time I drove it more then just around the block it was from the bay to chico, to go to school.

I try to drive mine a couple times a week, but that's not aways possible. I drive it to work when I have to go in on weekends. Also drive it around town just for fun, and to the local shows.
Also take it to the OC weekend cruise twice a year which is about a 3 hour drive each way. The car has never been trailered, but I try not to drive it in the rain. To lazy to clean it afterwards.

I live on kent island md,, go myself what do you drive? Fun weekends.
Its funny, I'm no where near the caliper of some of the nicer cars here. But I do trailer my car To the OC car show and far places. My reasons are the wife and son. I cannot get all the stuff I need into the Camaro so that they can "survive"..
all the single day trips are driving. My 16 month old son loves riding in the car so we go out as much as we can.

I got my car in June of 2005, and by December I put 3600 miles on it. That's counting the drive from Chicago (where I bought it) to Cleveland.
It is my car of choice if I'm going to a friend's house in the evenings, and on occation I drive it to work. I try to avoid doing that too much because drivers around here are braindead. But I avoid getting the car wet as much as possible and I do not drive it when there is salt on the road. My heater is also malfunctioning so driving in the cold is somewhat difficult. But that will be fixed shortly.
I love driving my car and take it out whenever I can.

How I PLAN on using my car:
Drive to cruise nights
Drive to car shows
Drive to open track events
Drive for ****s and giggles
Drive to work when mood strikes
Drive to Fontana drag strip
:)
I should note that it will still be a fair weather car since I have no wipers, no heat (defrost) and will be rolling on R-compound tires that don't play well in the water.

I have a 75 Camaro, check out my vbGarage. Just finished making plans for May 2006, I'm heading down Thrusday - Sunday. What year Camaro do you have?
I know what you mean about not fitting everything in the car for the weekend. I usaully have a friend who trailers his car, haul all my lugage for me, or my wife drives separate with friends and the kids. Since I have a 2 and a 5 year old, I hardly have enough room to go to the local shows. Have to take the spare tire out to make room for the stroller!

When done:
Occasional Daily Driver
Drive to go for a drive
Drive to the local hot-dog hut on hot-rod night
Car shows....probably not, I don't care what other people think
Drive to auto-x events
Drive to open track events
daily driver.
hopefully i'll get heat/air/defrost in this weekend. for the last 5 years its been either really cold or really hot.

Right now my car is primarily a good tool for filling up space in the garage. It get's driven (pushed) about 100' on average the last few years during the build-up.
I can honestly say the weather has never affected the way I've been using it lately....

I used be really into the "win a trophy" thing.. now it's more about hanging out and talking with gearheads. Not that I mind winning something or having people like my work, it's human nature. It's just not that important anymore.

When my car ran... Hell I was driving it in the snow! haha. Had to take her to the car wash to clean the snow/sand off of it. That lasted a week, too sketchy for me. It's a DD in the summer time, rain or shine. I drive my vehicles. Just me. Nothings TOO pretty to drive.

As for the shows...whatever floats your boat but more often than not, I got better stuff to do. I'll go now and then as a spectator just to see if I can find any good ideas, but I can't realisticly see myself ever spending a weekend sitting in a lawn chair next to my car. I'd rather be driving it, or doing something fun with Kathy.

Was my daily driver for many years. Then a nice day driver/ show car. Now a thrash around town whenever I feel froggy. Take it to the strip and beat the crap out of it, drive it home. Go out to eat. Go to KC or St Louis to grab a burger in it. Drive it to church. Go to the grocery store in it. Went on 5 or 6 Power Tours in it. Took my new kid home from the hospital in it. Now let it sit in the garage for the last couple months because it needs some attention and since my 58 Nomad is running, I am driving it! :candle:

i am in the middle of redoing my 37 ford, and have been over come with the "will that win" thougths, and i finely decided hell with it,i have to live with and if i don't like it why do it.i have spent the last 3 yrs racin it and enjoying it for how,i built it for in the first place.
i really think thats why alot of cars are built and sold, because some people build to win awards and not for personal love.

Now,I build my cars, bikes, and planes for my enjoyment. If other people like them, that's great. If not,I don't really care.
My El Camino is daily-driver capable. It doesn't get driven everyday but it's ready to do so.

It was great to drive to a couple of shows, take the Mrs. out to dinner, or just cruise around the town (Phoenix area suburb) with the kid.
The car gets tons of looks, thumbs up, etc...which is certainly nice to have people appreciate all the hard work and time (and $$$)that went into it.
But as of late (the last year or so) I haven't had the time to drive it as my business seems to be all too consuming.
Cars are meant to be driven (not collecting dust in a garagesuch as mine), and that's why I think so highly of those on this website who share that belief....
With that being said, I'll most likely have my car in the "for sale" section of this forum in the next couple of weeks to see if anyone is seriously interested before it goes to ebay, traderonline etc...
It'd be nice to see it go to some one here ...:-)

I daily-drive my car when i'm at home and i drive it to school and back...bout a 70 mile trip, maybe once a month. It spends a lot of time sitting in my school parking lot. I've owned it since my junior year in high school (im a freshman in college now) and have put a little over 10,000 miles on it...
It's tough to do the sit-and-drive routine for it. I wish I could find a cheapo civic to rock to school and back, and keep it garaged at home.

02-04-2006, 06:52 PM
My car sits in the garage for most of the winter (salt is rather unkind, as you know), but I drive the SS on nice days, and to work once in a blue moon (I'm a teacher, and the kids are ~ usually disrespectful~ of teacher's property) in the other three seasons. Of course I go to the cruise nights and occasional car show (would like to do Super Chevy this year). I have run it at Englishtown a few times, and I've whooped on it with a few of the guys from the board out on Long Island. The car does get driven, and hard, when it's out. We got it driveable in July of '04, and I've put near 4K miles on it since then. Not bad considering it sits for almost 3 months of the year.

I'm building my car for one reason: it will my only car, so it will have to do everything, from daily driver to car shows to auto-x. It served the same purpose from 1989-1995-ish (was it '96?) and after I finish it, it will finally actually be up to the task.
I don't know if this means anything, but we're 3 pages into this thread and I noticed that it seems that most of the members with some of the more amazing cars are notably absent from this thread so far... :hmm:

You talking to me? lol
The goat has been driven to several local outings already. The first actual cruise was to west Knoxville and it rained all the way home. So the cherry is gone, the underneath is dirty. Still waiting of Gary to have time to finish some small details, like the heater blower switch. Just got one recently, but the dash has got to come out one more time to install. It is snowing here right now and has rained off and on lately, so I am waiting on nice weather more than anything. However, it will see alot of weekend duty very soon. I would drive it to work, but it is impossible to haul lumber in it. lol
Ralph LoGrasso
02-04-2006, 10:06 PM
I drive my SS as often as I can, but hardly ever in the rain. Not because I'm afraid the car will get messed up but because I despise detailing cars; I'd much rather be driving them. So, I tend to only drive it on fair weather days and alot in the evenings. I drive it to school every now and then, but it's a 50 mile round trip, so I generally drive my DD. I can't drive it to work becuase as Bill said, these cars make terrible lumber haulers, LOL. The '68 will have similar use, but more often. I won't be as worried about racking up 10k miles a year with it (depreciation value is not as significant).
SicMonte
02-05-2006, 08:49 AM
my ss is driven whenever I get the chance. It is a major pain in the butt to take off the tarp and car cover (garage has another project in it now) but I try to drive it when the weather gets good. Once I get my mini-tub done and get it painted it will be garage kept and driven on the weekends.
DarkBuddha
02-05-2006, 09:40 AM
You talking to me? lol
I was talking in your general direction... :poke:  I'm actually very glad you posted, because I was thinking about what it might be like to own a car like yours (and some of the others on this site) and wondered how I would drive it. I like to think I'd be gung-ho and throw caution (and the huge investment) to the wind and drive the living crap out of the car. But I came to realize that I'd have serious reservations about commuting in bumper to bumer traffic, or leaving it parked in a grocery parking lot or parallel parked on a downtown street But I also realized that I also don't want to feel that way about a car all the time.
So, I guess it helped me feel better about the fact that my car won't be "perfect" or flawless, or be built-to-the-hilt, or groundbreaking, or even enviable. What it will be is useable and for me, I suspect I'll get more enjoyment from driving it anywhere/everywhere than I might from any of that other stuff.

OH, trust me, I feel the absolute same about the goat. I do worry about theft more than anything and have taken some precautions in that area. However, in the end, it is a damn car, no more, no less. For the same money, I could be driving a new 911. However, muscle cars are my passion and hopefully it will not depreciate as fast as the 911 would. As far as driving it, parking it, etc goes. I have the car insured as best as I can, and my philosophy about any car I have ever owned is this. If I can not use it, I do not need it. If I wanted a piece of art, I would have bought a picture, they are much easier to store and take up a lot less room. lol
Now, I did not build this one to take to the track, or to drive on the ragged edge every time it leaves the garage. I will not intentionally trash the car, but if in the course of driving, it gets totaled, so be it. Cars are replacable, fun driving them is not.
See Yall, I got to go drive now......lol

I did that 2 winters ago. Man was it fun. Limited slip and tires that hydroplane on water is quite a hoot. I went to the hockey arena parking lot and went to town. Residential areas that have freshly paved roads(but no houses even dug yet) are also fun. The ricer nature came out in me that night.

I don't own a trailer.
I've been on the last two Power Tours. Did the long haul in 2004 and went as far as Nashville in 2005.
Put over 100 miles on the road course in one day last September driving it like I stole it. There are links to in car videos in my sig.
Been to the drag strip twice running a best 12.01 @ 117.1.
Never broke anything, never broke down on the road. (knock on wood)
Car has 18,000 original miles. Over 7000 of those put on in the last two years.
Not a daily driver and I draw the line at driving it in the snow.
I attend shows occassionally but it was built to go, not show.
