Starter wiring

The car is a 72 Chevelle with a stock 350. I yanked the motor and the pics I took of the wiring are just off from the areas that I need(of course eh). If you guys could help me fill in the blanks that would be great.

I have 1 big red wire, 1 big purple.... The big red one is spliced in with the big red that goes to the alt. Does the big purple wire on the underhood harness go to the starter? onto the same pole as the big red wire?

Also... The yellow/pink wire combo that goes to the coil.... Is this a switched power source IE: When I turn the key, does it turn the flick the soleniod to turn the starter over?

If one of you could snap a pic of the wires on your starter/solenoid that would be great!

On most GM's, the purple wire goes to the terminal on your solenoid- That is what energizes the solenoid & that starts the whole shebang. It gets it's power when you turn the key to the start position.

The Yellow / pink (about 20gauge) should go from the starter R terminal to the coil +. This wire gives your coil full DC power when starting (key in the start position).

Of course, I highly recommend you get a wiring diagram from a factory service manual.

Thanks. I have the chassis manual for the car(the big ass expensive book) and I cannot find where this big red wire goes for the life of me.

the big red wire goes to the big positive terminal on the starter. this is a main power feed and should have a fuse link on it.

For a safer hook up you could omit this and wire the red wire from the battery to the alt to avoid too many hot leads running close to header tubes. Don't forget your fuse link wire.

it just loops back to your hand right? Looks like a BAT+ feed. Battery or starter terminal. It feeds power to the relay power junction.

They both reach to the starter and both have burnt insulation. Thus the reason why I'm sure they go to the starter. But the different ends on them go to different sized posts. I hear that the 72 year was a bit weird and had these 2 wires coming off the starter. So does that mean that I have 2 wires, Red and Purple going to one post, battery cable to another post, and yellow to the small? uggh. I hate this.

no, if it goes to the big bat terminal it was red or black. I've seen some blue but unsure if that was factory or not. Some did have 2 power leads,depeding on accesories equipt.
Trace back to your bulk head, should only have 1 purple lead. Thats starter "S" terminal.
Yellow runs to the "R" teminal, you can eliminate this cause you don't have a point ignition anymore. If your unsure after isolating the wires hook up the battery and check your relay juction for power...should be cold with the red wire disco.
Try to crank you engine, wont with purple disco...should be hot at the wire at cranking.
