Hi all,

I have a base 1967 Camaro that I’m putting an ls1 and 4l60e into. It has the stock 10 rear end (8.2 inch) with I believe 2.52 gears in it. The cam I’m putting in recommends at least 3.23. Should I see about changing out gears, and even putting Posi in or would that be a waste of money? I’m looking to make this a daily driver, not speed demon but also don’t wanna rip the rear end apart when I decide to maybe go fast once in awhile. I have read that the 8.5inch 10 bolts “corporate” out of the 70’s cars/trucks can be a straight bolt in and are better to rebuild than my current. Any experience/help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

So if you want to rebuild the 8.2 only once here is my .02
Buy a posi that you can upgrade to 30 spline axles.
With my Camaro LS/4L60E swaps I run 3.73 gears.
Weld the axle tubes to the housing. To do that properly it has to be arc welded with nickel rod and cooled properly.
Newer Camaro 8.5 axle assemblies are wider and the spring perches are wider and won't fit without mods.

^^is there a 30 spline option for 8.2s? Still not sure if I'd spend any money on an 8.2.

8.5s out of 68-79 novas fit 1st gens. I'm getting ready to build one this fall.

I'm running the stock 1964 8.2 rear in my chevelle and not having any problems with it, even stock axles. Have a cammed 6.0 with headers, GTO T56, and LS7 clutch.

Installed an Eaton diff, 3.73s, new bearings/races, seals, and moser stud girdle cover. Drilled the axles and installed larger 12x1.5mm studs as well. Have over 30k on it and it's still going. I drag race, road race, autocross, and drive all over the place, I'm sure there's stronger out there, but don't feel it's necessary.

The LS1 and 4L60e will not stress the 8.2 if you want to invest money elsewhere.

If you contact Moser I think they can build almost anything. But I hadn't thought of the Nova rear ends. Good call.
