Hello, any Cougar folks? I just picked up a ‘68 and would like to swap out these Coddington Junkyard Dog wheels for something better, more like the PT look and possibly lighter. Fronts are 17x7” 235/45, rears are 18x8” 255/45 and they look pretty sunk in. The car sits pretty low, but I do have room towards the outside, even though the fenders aren’t rolled. I can raise the coils a bit too. Mods on the car are TCI Pro Touring IFS, Torque Arm, Currie rear end (narrowed 2”), and RideTech coil overs. I think I can go 8” front and 9” rear, hopefully with a 275 or 285 back there. Here’s some pics of how much room is in the fenders.

I’m diggin these lightweight Flow-Formed Konig UltraGrams. A lil bit different from the norm I guess. They have several offsets in 17”& 18”

Diggin these as CounterGrams as well. Not bad for some lightweight budget wheels.

No.

That is a major step backward aesthetically. I'd like a fuller tighter wheel well, too.... but you have to respect the aesthetic of the car.

For every genre bending car (green maverick with Enkei's, maybe), there are 999 bad wheel choices.

Thanks for chiming in. I just don’t like the pointy spokes of these Junkyard Dogs. I’ve seen several better, simpler Torque Thrust style wheels I’d much rather have. Also, the sizes. I like staggered, but I’d prefer wider and the same diameter. Gonna try 8” front and 9-9.5” rear if I can get away with it. I just gotta get the perfect backspacings/offsets.

How about these Trans Am Race Engineering Superlites? These look really nice as well. I think they fit the bill as far as aesthetics.

The Ultragrams in Carbon Bronze would go really nice with the Cougar’s grey paint. It does have some bronze mixed in it. I think it would look really aggressive too!

Here’s some pics you can see a bit of bronze in the metallic.

This is a classic example of a great build that just missed the mark with the Wheel/tire package. You're definitely on the right track. It probably needs to come up a little as you said.

IMHO, I like the Ultragrams. I don't know what offset you'll need though so you may still be limited there.

Another option for the early Trans Am look is some of the offerings from Team lll wheels. They may not be super light, but they'll do pretty much any offset you need. They've got Torque Thrust looking wheels and these.

At the moment, I’m leaning towards the Ultragrams too. The Carbon Bronze color will look awesome against the Cougar’s paint. They look more Pro-Tour style vs. Restomod, IMO. Also, they’re lightweight and fairly inexpensive for Flow-Formed wheels… The E-T Mags LT-III’s look very nice as well. They do have a lot of sizes and offsets to choose from. Very similar look to the TARE Superlites.
