USCAR Weld-in Fuel Pump Assembly Ring; Epoxy vs. Welding?

Hey guys and gals,

I'm going to be installing a 5th gen Camaro and eventually CTSV fuel pump assembly into my stock fuel tank, and just picked up one of the fuel pump ring from Vaporworx. I have a welder and may try to just weld it, but the issue is that the fuel ring is stainless steel, and my tank is mild steel. I know that there is a particular kind of wire and gas combination that you can run to successfully weld the two, but I'm curious if there is some kind of epoxy out there that may do a better job at sealing the ring to the tank? I know that epoxy's have come a long way, so I thought it may be worth a conversation.

I would think something like panel bond would hold it in place

That recently released Holley/Earl's ring looks remarkably like the VaporWorx ring first made nearly 12 years ago.

Regarding the suitability of epoxy, I can't comment since I've not tested it and would not know the long-term affects that the variety of available fuels would have on it.

However, I've never seen a properly welded ring come out. Given what's at stake, it could be a risky adventure.

Thanks for the input Carl, I was hoping that you would chime in. I was pretty sure that the answer would be welding it in, but I thought I'd throw it out to see what the experts had to say. I need to practice up with my TIG welding skills now.

Tried and tested for more than a decade now, on several cars, w.o. any leaks/issues.

In case it makes you feel more secure, (tag) weld and apply the compound on the seams.

No one makes a 55-57 Chevy Wagon fuel tank that accepts a modern fuel pump, so I made it fit with a modified Gen5 Camaro fuel pump and 09-15 CTSV fuel hat. Mostly with spare parts that I had. I wished that the fuel hat wasn't so yellow, but it can't be seen when I'm behind the wheel, so I think it'll be ok. :fingersx:
