This is on a custom fuel tank and the model/year of cap the vendor said it took is not anywhere near close.
I'm hoping someone will recognize this and please tell me what fuel cap I need to order. It's for a sealed cap (the tank is set up for external venting). The profile that it has is uniform all the way around.
Thanks in advance!

Looks like a thermos style fuel filler used on airplanes. I think I'd change it out to something conventional.

I can't imagine it's that. The vendor built it to use a standard filler neck for a 69 F-body and they told me it took 73/74 Camaro (or maybe a 77/78) fuel cap (which I ordered and didn't come close to working).
It must be something else that is more conventional like you say.

Actually, I think it is a thermos style but if I'm wrong I'll be glad to know as a gatherer of trivia what it winds up being :twothumbs. Based on your post that it's based on a 69 F-body, I searched for that and found this link. Can you take a pic of the filler straight in instead of at an angle?

Post number one on that link shows the back of a 68, and if you look at the cap it has a finger pull. That's a thermos style cap, and it seals by squashing a rubber puck through the middle so the sides expand.

Sure, here is a shot head-on:

I've never seen how a 68 is attached inside that panel. The 69 is straight forward and just sits behind the license plate with a fuel cap on it. I think the 68 is multiple pieces to get that fake surround and something similar to like what a motorcycle fuel cap is like.

See if this one looks right. Stant 10571. It fits some 60s cars but all the Camaros listed are 70s.

Has a couple of retracting fingers that might grab that inner lip. If this doesn't do it I'm out of ideas.

That's like the one I have on my factory tank right now actually. So if you look at that black spring loaded pop-out bit on the side, there is one on each side. These correspond to notches cut into the end of the fill neck, and to insert it you simply apply pressure while rotating it to find the notches and then it snaps into place and locks. It's made to grab into notches cut into a lip that comes inwards, on this custom tank the lip goes outwards - if that makes sense.
On this custom tank, there are no notches, no threads, and seemingly nothing for a cap to hold on to that I've ever seen in my limited experience. I figured it would be something common to most custom Pro Touring tanks that everyone on here is using and someone would recognize it right away.

I had a similar brain fart with a Ricks tank many years ago. I was convinced the cap would not work. In fact it did, it screws in. The outer lip has nothing to do with it.
Post a pic of the cap.
