Hi, I'm sure this has been beaten to death a thousand times but here goes ... I have a 69 Camaro with a 383 stroker 11 to 1 with a good size cam, full length headers. I'm running Magnaflow's and the car is too loud inside between 1700 and 2000 rpm. Is it possible to find a great sounding muffler that will let me have a conversation with my wife while driving and still sound good ? I have a set of Vibrant resonators which i'm not sure will make it quieter or just reduce the drone.

Thanks for reading this ... JT

Throw a set of magnaflow high flow cats on your collectors. I'm running holley vr304 mufflers which are pretty much the same as the magnaflows. Installed the cats and it's made a world of difference. Picked up a little bottom end, don't feel it messed with the top end, and cleaned up the exhaust smell so I don't smell like I was on a mower when I get out of the car. Can carry on normal conversations, I hate I didn't do it sooner.

I've always used Magnaflow or Borla. I currently have the Borla XS on my Firebird and they're great.

I'll also suggest the Borla ProXS. I think for my next project, I'm going to try and find some variable tone mufflers though. That way I can dial it to what I prefer with and without my wife.

My own favorite is Classic Chambered stick mufflers. (http://classicchambered.com/) Magnaflow high performance bullet cats, a crossover, then the longest CC sticks you can fit, and you get a nice, deep, period-correct tone. You won't be talking at WOT, but at cruise they're pretty quiet. If still too loud, then a set of 12 inch glasspacks behind the axle will cut the volume without affecting the tone, which I had to do on one build that was also the family wagon. Wife thought it was too loud, but then she thinks the tire noise from coasting engine-off is too loud. You didn't say what size pipe you have, but after the mufflers dual 2.5s are plenty big for a NA 383, and smaller pipe diameter will help drop the volume.

Youtube has plenty of videos showing how these mufflers sound.

I installed Vibrant resonators in my tail pipes just before the tips, and it definitely mellowed it out a bit.

I want to thank everyone for their input. I ordered the Borla's and will let you know how it turned out ... JT

Borla Pro XS...Strait through design I get zero drone at cruise.Great exhaust note but when you put your foot to it it's even better. The fact that I get zero drone is huge but all around sound is amazing.406 sbc with 2.5 exhaust into X-pipe.Very happy with the Borlas

Same as mentioned above. I tried several different brands before installing Borla ProXS and they sound great. My engine specs are identical to yours and I believe you will be happy.

Another Borla ProXS fan. As stated, no drone. Mine actually have the slightest drone at idle and as soon as you touch the gas pedal it disappears. It's the opposite with many other mufflers.

I went with longer Magnaflow mufflers the second time around. 5x8 body ay 22" long but then I have room for it.

I used Borla XR1 with an LS7 big cam shaved heads full length ultimate headers. It doesn't really drone and is not very loud in the car unless my foot is in it.
But I do have two coats of raptor under my floor, I have sprayed on insulator and sound barrier inside along with dynamat on top of that and ACC carpet with mass backing.

What makes a Borla Pro XS sounds different than a typical Magnaflow? They appear to be a very similar design.
