I'm helping a friend figure out his recently purchased 69 Camaro with a 427 big block. The seller of the car did not have the cam number but swears it's a solid flat tappet cam. In the process of setting the valve lash I'm noticing that I can't get the feeler gauge to get tight. It seems in the past I could screw the adjuster and basically "trap" the gauge where it wouldn't pull out, and then back it off to the proper setting. I'm noticing that as I tighten the adjuster screw the pushrod is actually going down into the lifter, just slightly, say .060 or so. Is this at all normal with solid lifters? I need some feedback on this.
Note: I can see the lifters through the holes in the head and they definitely look like solid lifters. They don't have the retaining wires through the center of them that hydraulic lifters typically have. Any help is very much appreciated. Thank you!
