View Full Version : Stock gauges faceplate upgrade to more RPM and MPH questions??

Ok I"ll try to explain the best I can here . I have a 93 chevy Silverado. Just did a LS swap. Stock factory gauges only go to 5000 rpm and 85 mph. The LS Rev's past that pretty easy.. Some of these trucks did come with a gauge cluster that was for the 454ss that have a 6K tach and 110 speedo , but they are impossible to find and even if you do ,they are pretty expensive. I'm trying to get an understanding of how the stock gauges work. The stock gauges before the LS swap used a DRAC box to send a signal to the gauges. Now I get the signal from the LS pcm. It works fine and accurate. My question is I thought about just getting a custom gauge face that allows for more RPM and MPH, but I am not sure how the calibration would work or if it would even matter..?? As far as I can tell they use air core motors, but I can't find much info on how it all works together. I contacted a place that could make gauge face for me , but "The factory scales are non-linear so we would need information from whomever is doing the calibration in order to do accurate scales"... according to them..

I'm just trying to determine how the gauge motors interpret the signal in relation to the gauge face to read accurately or if there is a service that can perform calibrations for this kind of thing.. to make it all work together. Yes I can get aftermarket gauges, but most of them are $800 plus for the ones I like and not in the budget at the moment. I can get the face made for $150. That I can work with for now until I save up for the gauges I want in the future.. Any thoughts??

You could get someone like Redline gauge works to redo the circuit board calibration but it ain't gonna be cheap. I think your cheapest option would be to use a Dakota Digital interface to play with the calibration. Those years use a DRAC I think so you could also go this route:

But honestly, it would be faster to play with the DD interface. With the new gauge overlay and the cost of the module, you'd only be around $250 into everything.

I did something similar with my S10 & found a metric cluster for a 4 cylinder with 7K tach & 180 KPH that I reprogrammed to read mph.

Were the V6 trucks a 6K tach?

The box from Dakota may be your best bet for tach calibration with an aftermarket face.

Also when programming the LS computer, many accommodate a shift light so you can program it to light instead of using the tach at high rpm.

Thanks .. I think you beat me to it. I just discoverd those the other day . I will have to give DD a call to see if that would work for me.. Seems like it would be possible from the description. I was also informed that I could use HP tuners to calibrate them as well. Not sure on that one as of yet. This would be a nice way to get what I am looking for and still retain that stock look..
