View Full Version : How much of the Dodge Charger battery cable/power distribution is useful?

I was doing some pre-planning ahead of getting my car back and thought to search on "cars with trunk mounted batteries." Dodge Chargers came up and is of particular interest because I have a long vehicle.

Has anyone used the cables and/or power distribution from one of these? Thinking about a trip to LKQ just to take a look at the components.

John, I got a 5th gen Camaro cable since they mount their battery in the trunk. It was way long enough for my trunk mounted battery. I even ran it in between the inner/outer fenders for a clean under hood look. Super cheap on eBay considering it’s a high quality OEM 1/0 cable. Also it has a built in fuse don’t recall how much 30 or 60 amp, but can be used for sub amp etc.

Is the cable marked 1/0 or is this a gauge you found on a search ?.

The only reason I'm asking is I have not worked with one of those cables yet and if it is indeed 1/0 copper, then this would be great.

I did some basic searches and the descriptions have not called out gauge size but state "Common strand size provides high ‘strand count’ to improve conductor flexibility" which is a benefit but this can be true with an 18 gauge wire up to a 4/0 wire.

I just have to wonder if it is possibly a 1 gauge ?.

A product documentation PDF I found gives no hint to the gauge.

If you have links to specs, that would be wonderful. I might just not be putting in the proper search information. I don't know.

I don’t remember seeing any markings but honestly I wasn’t looking that close at it. I do remember measuring the cable and the thickness was within spec for a 1/0 cable without insulation when I googled 1/0 cable thickness. Also my mentality is, if it’s good enough to power a new vehicle with all modern electronics etc then it’s good enough for me.

I’m using an LSA just like a 5th gen Camaro, I also used the 5th gen alternator harness which goes from alternator to starter. That cable is also a 1/0 (I believe). I’ve never had a starting or charging issue. Also when I bought the battery cable it came with the ground cable (also 1/0 cable) that’s short. I grounded this to the wheel well

I’ll be out in the garage tomorrow I can measure the thickness of the cable without insulation and report back.

The reason I was asking is just so if anyone else is out there wanting to use it, at least we will know the gauge. The gauge could come in handy if someone is using it another way than what you are like with an old style big block with a stock style starter that probably would draw a lot more power than the current motor and starter setups on the newer cars.

I've been installing car audio sine the late 70's and I've seen some wire insulation be real thick and others real thin and this does not determine the gauge of wire it is covering like you know.

Yes, if you can get some measurements, that would be great to share.
