View Full Version : Dorothy, my 1969 Camaro build

I bought this car from the original owners son. The woman had bought it new in San Luis Obispo, California, which it stayed for much of its life. She moved to Washington for a few years, but returned to SLO. Her name was Dorothy, so that’s where the name of my car comes from. When I purchased the car, I was given an enormous stack of receipts and information on the car. Pretty cool to me to see the history on paper. The dealership painted the car fathom green because she wanted that color on a car with an automatic, and the Z-28 parked next to it was FG and had a 4 speed. Lol. They definitely don’t give that sort of service these days if you want something specific. Anyways, here are some photos of the progress...187380187381187382187383187384187385

Had to get a picture with my yellow 69 just before I sold it... had that car for almost 30 years and never drove it... oh well, I’m making up for it with the “new” 69

Took home a plaque from a race/show that I attended. I pulled up to park and the power steering hose blew, spraying the header and actually started on fire. You can see the fire retardant on the ground... anyway, I left the car there and the judges assumed that I was in the show. Lol.
Quick tip here, don’t do a big smoky burnout leaving a car show, right in front of the cops, they don’t see the humor in it apparently *♂️ I honestly didn’t see him. Haha

Great car with a really cool history! Care to share some pictures of the modifications in the front perches for the mini-tubs and leaf springs? Did you go with the DSE kit?

Love that you kept everything else original. Still amazing how dramatic wheels/tires and stance changes the entire look of these cars. Great work!

i didn’t have to modify the front perches at all, as there is more than enough “adjustment” by simply loosening the bolts and retightening them after the spring is in the desired location.
Yes, I used DSE for everything in the rear. 👍

Such a long process when you have to juggle work, work around the house, and then this stuff...
Put a coat of primer over the exposed metal just in case it takes me longer to get back to it than planned. I don't want to deal with rust !!!

I'll get there though, I miss driving this car every day !!!

Small progression steps, but headed in the right direction.
I bought a quarter panel from National Parts Depot, and it actually fit pretty dang good. the one area that I couldn't get to fit correctly, is near the trunk lid / filler panel area. I decided to weld slowly and build up the "missing" area. Once I get it sanded/ shaped, it should look pretty good. Fingers crossed.
Anyways, here are some more pics. Keep in mind, I am not a professional welder, lol

You’re doing a great job. Very impressive. What size wheels and tyres are you running? I just mocked up 10 x 18’s on my Dad’s 69. Would like to go wider but too many other things to sort out first. Looking at 18 x 9’s on the front with a 265. Also what make and model are your tyres. Nice looking tread pattern
I zoomed in and they’re 335/30/18’s , NT-01.

I need some advice on window trim clips. I bought the OER brand clips for the rear trim, but the trim pops back off with little to no effort. I know that I have them installed correctly, they just don't hold tight.
