A buddy of mine has a toyota tacoma, has anyone tried to get one of these trucks setup for handling? Autocross, track day or street, I am curious to hear any info.

I have a 92 Toyota pickup, 22re, with stock drivetrain. I installed DJM LCA's (to lower ride height 2"), poly bushings on UCA's, poly on sway bars, added a rear bar, 2" lowering blocks, and new gas shocks (Nitro's I think). I also installed 16x8's with 225/50/16's.

The extra weight I carry around is fairly well placed (except the front tube bumper). I added a bedliner, carpet kit, camper shell, and rear tube bumper.

When the time comes to replace the timing chain (150k miles), I will get parts from LC Engineering and upgrade the head, cam, and a few other parts to increase the power. I have a Centerforce II clutch now.

While the truck is not fast, it does handle fairly well due to the improved weight balance. I have not tried any type of track driving, but I do push it very hard on some of the corners I am familiar with and it hangs in there quite well. I can easily distance myself from modern non-performance cars when entering or exiting freeways, and have had a few friends lose control trying to stay with me. My tires do not even make noise, while their tires are howling away.

If the Tacoma has a V6, it will undoubtedly need more tweaking to maximize performance as the engine power will be greater than mine.

I setup the truck when I was single and needed a 'multi-purpose' area that was warm and dry. Plus the storage factor for my sporting equipment was cool too. The overall weight balance is decent and the truck can handle most corners in excess of double the posted speed limit without any loss of traction. Of course more power would help, as the stock 22re is slightly overwhelmed by my heavy foot. When I buy a set of scales for the Camaro setup I will spend some time tweaking on the truck too for the heck of it. It is my daily driver, so I drive it hard and get as much enjoyment out of it as I can.

I drive my 87 toyota about how you drive yours except this one is a 4X4 with stock suspension and 31X10.5" tires. that 22r engine rocks, but is a lacking on top end, not bad for crawling though. It handles pretty good for a truck with some fun oversteer if you want it to....crazy...yes...fun...oh yeah
