View Full Version : 5 Point harness with stock seats?

Just installed a Tigercage and Crow harness in my 67 Camaro. I have the harness installed as a 4 point right now. My seats are stock frames, re-foamed and covered TMI sport seats. Anyone know if I can set them up to work with the submarine belt? Is there a way to pass the belt through the seat properly?

I am more concerned about the shoulder harness. Does this seat have headrests?
No racing harness will function properly when installed in vehicles equipped with incompatible seats. Standard seats that have no headrests, or backrests with integrated headrests and no openings between the backrest and the headrest are non-starters. Most stock Porsche seats are like this, aptly named ‘tombstones’. In this type of seat the shoulder belts will simply slide off your shoulders during an accident, which isn’t ideal.

I used seats out of a 69 so I could get head rests.
Bollocks!!! I wish I knew about those special 4 point belts before I bought mine!!

Nice article! It covers all the recommended technical points from Schroth's own publications.
First thing to notice: no mention of 5 point harnesses. They are a thing of the past -- you'll be wanting to look for a 6 point setup. And while it technically can be done with a stock seat, you'll be hard-pressed to find someone willing to take on the liability of modifying a stock seat.
If you want a 6 point harness, you really ought to get seats that are rated for a 6 pt harness.

I already have the 5 point setup and really like the Crow harness. Kinda seems like seats are in my future at some point though. They are more affordable than I had initially thought. I would need to find some that don't look super modern but have the modern features.

I was able to install these in my Nova for the tiger cage. Look under your seat to see if you can pass it through the seat frame. Only had to cut the seat foam out and did not have to modify the seat frame. Use a fabric pen to mark the top of the seat where you and it, then pass a screwdriver or something from the bottom to see if any of the seat frame will be in the way. Worked great on the Pro-Car Rally seats.

Awesome!!!! This is exactly the info I was hoping to find. That turned out great, your interior is sweet. I will check out the bottom of my seats and see if there is room. Did you just bolt the submarine belt to the floor using a backing plate? Thanks!

When I bought my tiger cage the person who sold it to me had extra mounting plates for the tiger cage. I used the extra pinch weld bracket from the tiger cage then drilled a hole in the middle of the plate and made a backing plate out of 1/4 steel and secured it under the car.

Here is the bracket I used. You could probably call and get one from ridetech or just use an I-hook and large washer. Here is the extra bracket that I used. Probably could just make your own if you wanted to.

Here is another possible option.

I used to be a Corbeau Distributor 10 years ago - I think I have a Box of these Plastic Belt Guards at home. I'll give a look this weekend

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I was curious if you've had any problems with the belt pass through that you did on your seats? I have the same seats, and the same dilemma with installing the submarine belt. Does the vinyl stretch away from the plastic insert or anything?
Again, apologies for bringing this back from the archives. And thanks in advance!

You can use a 6 point harness, then attach the anti-sub ends to the lap belt anchorage.
