I bought a new crate engine last fall from a Chevrolet dealership in Colorado. There original ship date to them was 2018 so they had it in their inventory a while. Still in the crate, plastic and paper intact. I read the GM paperwork and they say to prime the engine with oil so I assumed it was shipped with no oil. I’m swapping to a LS1 oil pan for clearance so I just rolled it over on the stand to remove the pan. Wasn’t long till I felt my leg and looked down to see oil pouring out in my shoe and all over the floor.

I never even pulled the dipstick but it had a full 8 quarts in it if I added in what was in the floor and my shoe. So do they ship them full of oil, or did the dealer add the oil possibly to prevent corrosion, etc. I pulled the filter and it was full, but it had been upside down. Just wondering if I still need to prime it or has it already been done?

Why take a chance? I would prime it myself

Mine arrived with oil in it. I swapped the pan so I had to drain it. I would definitely prime it.

Definitely the safe choice is to prime it. I can’t believe I diddnt check it before I rolled it over but I was just convinced they shipped empty. I also didn’t think the filter would fill up without the oil pump running or being pressurized but maybe it will.
