View Full Version : Making my own Front runner system?

Hi!

I am thinking about making my own Front runner system. The idea I had was to make a kit like the ones Vintage Air is selling, but not to include anything but the pulleys, the big aluminum piece, bolts and brackets for the different setups.

The reason for doing this, is that I would like some options that I don't get with wintage air. First of, I'm not running AC, only PS and generator and waterpump. Second is that I want to choose my own colors for the setup, anodized colors ofcourse.

Now I need either very detailed mesaurments or complete drawings of either vintage airs FRS or similar, just to get som dimensions.

If any of you guys have that, please send me a message.

Also, if I do this thing properly, how many of you guys would be interrested in buying a kit like this? A kit with the essential parts, but you would have to buy your own waterpump, generator, powersteering pump etc. Or do you all want AC? If I make one with AC would that be interesting? choosing your own anodized color for the kit. and hopefully at a better price too.

please write in this thread so I can see how many would be interrested.

Thanks!

Dan,

I have made about a half dozen systems for engines that are not covered by the systems already offered. You are going to have a tough time doing it without making custom pulleys. Especially the crank and water pump pulleys. The AC compressor in almost every case needs a special block for the freon to allow the pump to run right up against the block. It will almost need to be a full fit simply because you can't leave anything out and have it be a useful offering.

I think I must clarify some things here. I will be making custom pulleys for the kits. I was thinking about making systems for people who don't want AC but still want a front runner system. But if everyone wants AC then maybe I have to make a system for that too. but primarily no AC. Maybe I'll make a copy of the vintage air FRS, but with different features, like colors and some other shapes etc, then the buyer can go to Vintage Air and buy the compressors and stuff. fo a more Custom apperence.

I don't know, this is still just an idea, so if you have any request as to how this system should be, look like etc, please write this in this thread.

Thanks for the input!

Guess I misunderstood your post. I thought you had not considered the pulleys. Post up pics as you go along. Its a lot of work to build them but fun. I am just getting ready to start one for the LS1 in my Nova. Althought S&P performance has one now that is pretty nice.

you may want to look at the new kits offered by Billet Specialties. The cost is very affordable for some.

All I found on Billet Specialties are the Tru Trac systems that goes for between $1700-$2300. That is way too much for me and I would guess for many others too.

I'm hoping that I would be able to keep cost under $1000 for the most expensive system and as low as $700 maybe for the least expensive.

$1195.00 no power steering
$1395.00 with PS

Well that is the V belt version. I'm talking about a serpentine belt kit.

Call me crazy, but I don't like the multiple-serpentine setups. Just running one belt might not provide any backup, but I like it that way.

Hay I am with you. I have thought the same. Zoops, Billet Specialties and March are raping us for those kits.

I AM INTERESTED IN AN ALTERNATIVE.

I WILL PAY $10000 FOR A MOTOR BUT NOT $2700 FOR THE PULLIES.

I agree they are expensive but if you see them in person it's worth it for the right project.

I also agree. Not only do they cost 2month salory, they are also kind of boring in my opinion. Shure they look good but I want to choose color on everything, and choose style of pulleys.

I want something like this picture of the Chicane engine from Rad Rides by Troy

The one on the Chicayne is the exact one that Billet Specialties sells. The only diffence is that they don't offer it with the Vac Pump.

Not exactly the same, the crankpulley seams to be diffrent than on the tru track systems.
and they are also anodized I think. looks like it.

I'm not into the billet stuff myself, and am still leaning towards using these when the time comes.

If you hover over kits, the next line down gives the options avail sbc bbc etc, click there...

I might be interested w/o AC depending on pricing. ALso, CV Products has some setups but I haven't done any spec'g either.

Here is the setup that I have been working on for my motor. I liked the placement of the AC and alt on the frontrunner system but I also want to run a vacuum pump where their belt tentioner is and I did not like their price.

I got side tracked with body work on my car so the system is not finished yet. All I really need to finish the system is to get a crank pulley (which will be a combination of a CV dual pin crank hub and JonesRacing pulleys) and to fab the final spacers for the KRC steering pump bracket.

I think you are set on a single belt system, and this a dual serp belt system, but with some measuring and thinking you should be able to make you own belt system without spending a ton of money.

Look at CV products, Canton, Jones Racing, and Powermaster Alternators. They all have bracketry systems that you may be able piece together or fab your own brackets.
