Have been a long time lurker/member finally pulling the trigger on a build. Set a budget of $30K to get the car running and driving. Picked this car up for $3,800 about three years ago and has been sitting in the garage while i was working on other projects and trying to decide what I wanted to do. Pulled the trigger on all the parts within the last month.
Parts list is as goes picked up an allegedly 17K mile L92 6.2 aluminum block 821 heads, came with VVT delete parts from Texas Speed new in the box, LS3 intake, bought a 102mm Holley Sniper throttle body for it, Holley Terminator X, Holley 12.3'" pro dash. New Tremec close ratio t56 magnum, Ram Billet steel flywheel, McLeod RST dual disc, McLeod hydraulics and pedal assembly, Speedway Motors Fabricated 9" narrowed to 56" with Currie 31 spline axles, Speedway Motors Nodular 3rd member with 3.50 gears and Powertrax Gear type posi. Holley Sniper EFI Fuel tank with 400 LPH pump. Will be using stock subframe and stitch welding the seams. Ridetech complete HQ coil over system with Truturn and new Borgeson steering gearbox, Wilwood master cylinder, Wilwood Forged Superlite 6 piston 12.88"two piece rotors fronts, Wilwood Forged Superlite 4 piston 12.88" two piece rotors rears. Ridetech parts and rear brakes should be here tomorrow.
Will be ordering DSE Mini Tubs, DSE smooth firewall panel, will make my own trans tunnel modifications. still need to order engine mounts, trans crossmember and mount, oil pan and headers.
For now the plan is to leave the body as is and install a new vinyl top and maybe matte clear the car for now. still undecided on wheels going to lean toward something budget friendly.

Thanks appreciate that. Been stalled for a little while because of the move and getting situated plus it’s a lot colder here in Indianapolis so I haven’t be able to get out to the garage as much as I’d like to.

Some more parts came in, for the most part just waiting on the back ordered parts, (rear suspension, front lower control arms, front brakes, Holley dash, flywheel) have a couple other projects to finish up. Hoping to start on this around the middle of February dune season always messes up project progress, have my S10 that has been waiting for the LS1 to get its bigger cam and 243 heads, Caltracs bars new front and rear springs, 4th Gen Camaro rears discs and AC lines built.
On a side note can someone explain why the Nova Detroit Speed tubs are more expensive than the F-body tubs when they come with templates to make the closeout panels and F-body comes with the panels?!

Always nice to see another Nova.
The McLeod clutch master is a nice setup. Just be sure to bench bleed it before you install it. They are impossible to bleed in the car. Ask me how I know.:guilty: I would also suggest a remote speed bleeder similar to what Tick offers. Once the engine and trans is installed the factory bleeder is almost impossible to get at.
When it comes to the roof I would be tempted to keep the vinyl roof trim and paint the roof white.

So it has been a while, I have been working on the car a little here and there. Has been a busy year and a half bought a business ran it well built some equity and sold it, decided it wasn’t for me. So decided to take some time off and finish this car and spend some time with the family.
Anyway back to the car, I had everything to go twin turbo then decided I wanted to go LSA supercharged instead. I’m going to be modifying the Tanks Inc tank to accept a Holley dual fuel pump set up and bar lining the car. I go the subframe cleaned up and powder coated, engine torn down reassembled with rings gapped for boost. Purchased a Speedtech smooth firewall and trans tunnel sheet metal pieces and welded those in. Hopefully will be marrying the subframe to the body this week after I get the firewall bodyworked in. If anyone knows is there any reason to leave the blower motor hole unfilled? I will be installing Vintage Air once it comes in off back order. Also took a gamble on the CX Racing Long tubes and it looks like they will be a good choice, just wish they had a bigger primary tube option.

Did you go with the ExtReme tunnel cover (the full length trans tunnel AND driveshaft tunnel) or the T56 swap cover that just makes clearance for the transmission at the trans tunnel? I've been debating back on forth on what I am going with. I don't think I'll need the ExtReme, but I'd hate to get the car together and find that I needed the extra clearance. Your car has a killer look to it already. I'm building a 72, currently installing mini tubs. I had all of the sheet metal replaced, but always wanted to build one with patina and original paint like yours.
Thanks!

I went with just the T56 trans cover option. Plan on running the bench seat still so hopefully this was the right choice.

I believe you can get by with it with the right shifter and shifter location, or so I've heard. I'm also thinking the extreme cover is for even lower ride heights with 1/2 height body mounts and such. There isn't a lot of info on it. Definitely let us know how it goes

Some more Update pics, went with a complete Inovators West 8 rib pulley set up and an Olson Kustom Works blower pulley idlers. Still waiting for the upper pulley, bracket and idlers. Nice part about this set up is runs one belt and lets me use the 4th Gen F-body accessories I already had with the LSA blower. Installed the firewall and T56 tunnel cover earlier this week. Will be seam sealing and body working and painting it starting today. Having issues getting my phone to cooperate with the site today, all the pic orders are off sorry about that guys. Also made some hard lines for the Aeroflow fuel rails, power levels I’m planning on making the stock rails would not keep up with.

202500202501202502202503202504202505202506202507Wa iting for some items to show up, supercharger pulley and idler bracket set up so I can run it all off of one belt with F-Body spacing. Part of my Vintage air kit should be here tomorrow or Thursday, once I have that I can start on the dash area and get the Holley 12.3” dash mount fabbed. I’m a little all over the place right now, seems like I’m waiting on parts for everything I have touched. Picked up a top side compressor mount from Dirty Dingo today, scuffed it and painted it with Steel-It then got it installed. Tomorrow will get the radiator and fan mounted then start making some brake lines. Had to move my clutch reservoir from where I originally mounted it to gate the proportioning valve in it’s “home” not sure if I like how it mounts or the 45 degree flare when the rest of the car will be all 37 degree AN. Hoping to have this thing moving in a few weeks, Biggest hurdle is going to be the rear mini tubs. I am not a fan of body work, I’m slow at it and it’s messy I’m more of a wiring and plumbing guy. Need to contact DSE as the guy I had cut out my filler plates somehow lost the templates.

Started on the Mini-tub install yesterday. Is just roughed in on the one side for now, trying to find the motivation to go back out there today. Having never done this job… what a pain in the ass, not hard just time consuming. Have never liked body/metal work just no way to shortcut it if you want it done right. Hoping to have the car on the ground as a roller next week. We’ll see how that goes. Still waiting on my blower pulley setup that I ordered over six weeks ago, guy refuses to even give me an eta. About to call the credit card company and dispute the charges and order from a different company. I’m a former small business owner and I get it you get behind. I really don’t want to do that, but the attitude I’m getting from the owner is slowly starting to make me not feel bad about maybe doing it.
Can’t remember the last time I saw a bumper Jack or a 14” rally wheel.

It was not bad at all, not a fan of the bolt style that it came with. Newer kits come with rivnuts which I would have rather used. Was not over concerned because I bolted and welded mine in place.

Well I got her on the ground and discovered I had a measurement off on my four link brackets that I welded to the rearend. Cut them off today and got new brackets tacked in place, will finish weld them tomorrow. Once rear end is done can start on the exhaust, brake lines and plumbing the fuel lines. I also modified the Tanks Inc tank to accept a Holley dual 450LPH pump assembly, will use the Terminator-X to turn on the second pump when it sees around 25-30% throttle. Tank is mounted and also got the Holley 12.3” dash mounted, plan is to make a custom dash bezel out of 18 gauge steel and some round bar. Was hoping to make Goodguys here in AZ in two weeks but just not going to happen. Have some really cool things planned for the wiring. I’m one of the sick in the head guys that likes to do wiring and plumbing stainless lines.
Thanks for the compliments guys, a lot of this stuff is my first attempt at this level of fab work. Have done a lot of swaps over the years but this is my first real dive into sheet metal work.

You going to paint it or keep the patina? Wouldn't have to worry about rock chips or scratches and it looks really cool.
Tidony
11-09-2022, 07:48 AM
Going to keep it patina is nice not caring about a rock chip or a door ding. I chased this car for a couple years because it was an untouched car it was all original. By the time I bought it someone had taken it apart to restore it. It is a really solid car with exception of typical clogged drain spots. I have always loved ratty looking cars with nice interiors, drivetrain and suspension even before it was common.
No one expected this one to be a ten second street car back when I threw it together was a turbo LS with a turbo 400 when swaps weren’t that common yet. Car was a blast and surprised a lot of people. Built that car for under $10K and it was so much fun.

The cars patina coupled with the wheel/tire combo and stance you have established sets the car off perfectly. Understated, and with the 307 call-outs - the car in the other lane may not see the thumping you will be dishing out, coming!

Well have been slacking the last few weeks. Between the Holidays, dune trips, daughter’s dance recital, school play, and other family outings my time with the car was limited. Am back on it though. Completed plumbing the stainless brake lines and the stainless hard lines and hoses for the fuel system. Not entirely happy with the rear section of the hard lines for the fuel system with routing them around the four link but they are in and should hold well and be far enough away from the 3” exhaust I will be building. Mounted the flex fuel sensor along the return line under the passenger door using a Motion Raceworks flex fuel sensor mount. Got the 3.5” Aluminum driveshaft from Inland Empire Driveshaft installed along with a 1350 Yukon forged yoke on the 9”. Definitely wish the car was not undercoated, will just continue to peel it off over the years as it keeps getting brittle. Part of me wanted to blast the underside of the car, but didn’t want to have to deal with painting it when I’m not going to that level with this car at this point in time. All in all it’s coming together just about two months later than I originally wanted.

Been slacking for a couple months and had a couple vehicles to wire up for some customers. I’ve started doing a wiring service in the last couple months. Trying to get jobs lined up so need to get my car moving so I have the room.
Now onto the wiring. I opted for an American Autowire harness for the body. I cut the Holley wire harness in half and installed Mil-spec connectors. Modified the factory style fuse panel bulk head connector and firewall to accommodate a MilSpec connector for the headlight harness as well.
Built a rear main power fuse and ground panel, modified a GSI Machine Optima battery mount and mounted the battery, built an ECM, fan and relay power buss bracket for up front on the trans tunnel. Car is coming to get her quickly. Have to pull the heads that’s a long story so hopefully car will be making noise by next week.

Got the Holley 12.3” finally mounted is a tight fit when trying to maintain a good viewing angle. Bezel a “Holley” Racepack dash that I cut up. Had to space the column and notch the shift bowl. This may change once my swap for the manual trans Tilt column. I may even take out the Holley dash and go to a Dakota Digital.

Was originally planning to keep the bench seat, with the Speedtech trans tunnel piece it was going to require some extensive modifications in addition to modifying it for bolsters and everything to keep me planted. Was cheaper and way easier to go with a set of Corbeau GTSii seats. Plan is to have medium blue plaid inserts put into them at a later date when I get to redoing the interior. I made some seat brackets from 3/16” flat stock. I had originally built them with a down slope that followed the contour of the floor but that made them rub the trans tunnel so had to go with a flat style bracket. I sit a little high in the car and should have ordered the seats with 1” cut out of the foam. All that being said I am pretty happy with the fit. 207323

Been a little slow getting to this point. Have been battling some leaks, pretty sure they’re all sorted. Tig welder I had died so I bought a new Miller Synchrowave 210, this is my first time ever messing with stainless steel results are not good but not bad. Plan is to keep playing with stainless and when I’m ready I’ll purchase all sanitary stainless and redo the entire exhaust. Brakes are bleed, front end is eyeball and tape aligned so should be good enough for a test drive this weekend.

Been a little while since I updated, been doing work on other people’s cars and have limited space. I’ve had the car out a couple times and it’s spicy for sure. Have put about 100 miles on it and still shaking it down. Finished up the water air set up, had a hiccup with an ECU had to order another Holley Terminator X for it. Still need to finish the interior and may be changing my cooling fan set up. I also picked up another car I will be starting on once the interior in the 70 is done. 212688

Built a simple intake, my first time welding thin Aluminum, will be getting boxed in at a later date when I change the cooling fan over to a PWM set up from a ZL1, Derale two speed is just not moving enough air.

It was a 17K mile motor, I went through it installed new rings gapped for some boost, installed ARP hardware, just the typical LS stuff to keep it alive, then sourced a good used LSA blower because I couldn’t find a new one at the time (rockauto has new ones right now) used fourth gen F body accessories converted them to 8 rib and used a Dirty Dingo AC bracket and made different spacers to make it line up with the 8 rib setup. Knowing what I know now I would get a complete accessory drive from LSX concepts, Wegner or Holley (requires some notching for the low mount AC) and save some headaches and the cost is close to the same.

Really? Anytime? Think it depends on the rest of the combo, how you want it do drive, and what type of use you plan for the car. Plus he's got a positive displacement blower on it, it's bound to put a high torque number out.
Tidony, nice build. great numbers. Should be a very versatile setup. Enjoy!

Really? Anytime? Think it depends on the rest of the combo, how you want it do drive, and what type of use you plan for the car. Plus he's got a positive displacement blower on it, it's bound to put a high torque number out.

Thank you.
Great numbers. Why didn't you rev it to at least 6k RPM? I bet it is making 600HP at higher RPM.

Was wondering the same thing. The 5700rpm was a pretty low peak with that setup exactly the way it sits. Should still be going up past 6k unless it's valve float or lack of fuel. Maybe didn't feel like pushing it first time out? I think you'd need a one time run to 6500rpm to see where it starts to fall off.

Stopped making power at 5710 rpm I spun it to 6000 rpm cam duration is only 217/228 @.050” and the LSA is 112 advanced 2 degrees. No valve float, plenty of fuel 1050cc injectors with twin 450lph pumps, injector duty cycle was low and maintained low 11’s AFR through the final pull after I made a couple adjustments. Cam is a “truck” cam for torque. Did right about what I wanted it to, would have liked to have seen 600HP but just didn’t happen, it’s also only on 91 octane pump gas. I’m working on getting the gas tune better sorted then will get it setup on pump E85 and go back to the Dyno.

Log your boost next dyno run. It might be a "small truck cam" for torque, but with with a 39* intake valve closing it should keep making more power past 6k (even smaller cams with earlier IVC do). Something is holding the setup back, and it's not the camshaft.

Will definitely do that, for some reason at the Dyno Holley did not want to data log correctly then on the ride home it did. Have not had a chance to do a decent pull, Car does almost 85mph in second gear and I live in the city so have to get way out of town to do a full third or fourth gear pull. I can’t run it at the track yet as I don’t have seat belts in it yet, decided to put a six point in it am waiting for the fabricator, have been added to the wait list. Another friend that was there said he thought my air filter was a little small, I tried looking up the air flow numbers for it on K&N website and couldn’t find it. I plan on taking it back to my friend’s place to Dyno it again hopefully soon. I wouldn’t doubt if I have some belt slip with that single belt setup, have regretted going that route since I started it up the first time. At this point I need to make it work, too much money invested into it and would not want to sell it to someone else and make it there problem just doesn’t seem right. Every time I see someone ask about going that route I tell them not to and recommend them to setups that I know work, something with a separate supercharger belt.

Cool. BTW, did you ever figure out why it was peaking at 5700rpm?

Yep, belt slip happening in the higher RPM range, boost starts to drop. I can’t get a shorter belt so am having a custom sized alternator pulley cut for it and may go up a size from 2.45” on the upper to a 2.55” upper to gain some belt wrap. Car makes enough power for what I want to do with it so just going to sort it out the way it is. Considered going to a dual belt setup but I’m into this setup for enough $$ that I don’t want to ditch it and wouldn’t feel right selling it unless I get it fully sorted.

"Well I got her on the ground and discovered I had a measurement off on my four link brackets that I welded to the rearend. Cut them off today and got new brackets tacked in place,"
Hey Joe can you explain this, I'm always 2nd guessing my measurements when I did my 12 bolt and don't want to replay what you did when its painted and ready to install,

If you’re using the weld on lower control arm/coil over mounts triple check your pinion angle and side to placement. I messed up my side to side by a 1/4” of an inch some how so bought new brackets and started over.

Love home built cars, with all due respect to the shops that do some primo work that help us guys with some dilemma's that we face and cues on how to tackle some stuff.
The car rips- love it! Nothing like a dose of HP in the morning to get your day started when we're hibernating in winters cold. Thanks.

Love this build, absolutely immaculate plumbing, wiring, etc. Truly impressed with how you routed the exhaust over the axle, what size exhaust is that?
Thanks
