I have a Moser Full float grand national axle. The drive flanges hav 3.06” diameter center hubs where the wheel center mounts instead of the typical 2.77” gm size.

I have seen several setup using this axle in past builds. Did you turn down the flange or have the wheels made to fit the flange or is there a gm sized drive flange I’m not aware of?

I already have my Detroit speed Quadra link brackets welded on but I’m almost wishing I had just gone with the semi float 9”. I also have to solve the emergency brake issue so I’ll take any advice on that issue as wel

thanks for your time

here is a thread showing a couple builds with this axle but back a few years

Here is a look at the flange.

I used to have a Moser floater, so excuse me if I'm wrong . I thought the 5x4.75 only came in small snout. I know the dust cap extended over the edge of the snout and I had to get mine milled down.

You can turn down the flange or open the wheel. I’ve done both. Opening the wheel is the better option in my opinion.
The center cap is also large. Pro tip- Coleman Racing has small steel caps that you can buy for cheap that fit the triangle profile of the moser hub (because moser hubs are a copy of coleman). And you just need some RTV and shorter 1/4-20 bolts.

Thanks all.

schwartz, I was hoping you would chime in, the black car in the thread link was a car you built. What did you do for an emergency brake? I’m looking at small mechanical calipers.

I picked up the axle new, but used for mock up, with custom built rear rotors for Z06 brakes for $400 and I couldn’t say no. I’m hoping the rotor width doesn’t limit my options for e-brake.

Unless I just missed them I don’t find an offering from Moser with any smaller center. They do offer a solid aluminum flange that could be easily turned.

Below is a picture of Steve Hayes rear axle. Looks like it possibly has a Coleman Racing aluminum drive flange. I can’t tell for sure from the picture but it looks like the hub diameter may have been turned down.

Looking on Moser's website to refresh my memory, the 5x4.75 only comes in small snout. Moser's site has the GN hub in small or large snout, but it only comes in 5x5 bolt pattern. Something just doesn't sound right, IMO. Did you attempt to mount the wheel and verify the hub is 5x4.75?
My dust caps were turned down so that the caps for my Rushforth wheels could be installed. I cannot find any pics of my axle installed but you get the idea. If I remember correctly Steve does not have an e-brake as I had discussions with him when I did have floater. Also you can find the calipers lots of people have used on the link below, but you would need to fab you're own mounting bracket to be welded on the housing. The easiest solution would probably be a pinion mounted e-brake. https://www.ipsco.org/Viper_files/parkingbrakekitViper.htm
You can see the pic below of my turned down caps.

Yes my hubs use the DBP (dual bolt pattern) and studs are at 5on4-3/4. The 5BP and the DBP both use to the small snout and appear to have the same flange wheel center diameter. Thanks for the e-brake link. Fabbing brackets shouldn’t be an issue, I’m just looking for a reliable option that won’t be in the way. I’m not a big fan of pinion brakes so if it comes down to that, I may have an axle for sale, lol.

Thanks
Mike

If I'm interpreting the original question correctly, you were wondering if your wheels would clear the hub. They should not have an issue.

I have not ordered my wheels yet, but I have a set of 8” rally’s and they will not fit. They will clear almost all the way down to where the flange spreads out at the base. if I order a standard gm wheel with the 70.3mm or 2.77” hubcentric center hole they won’t fit the moser flange so my options are turn down the flange or order the wheel with a larger center. I can easily turn them down except for the little lightening holes will be in the new radius which should be fine but it bothers me. It also doesn’t seem right to order an odd sized wheel center and that bugs me too. I was just hoping there was a more elegant solution but I’ll probably just turn down the flange so my wheels will be a standard gm center in case I ever decide to change and sell them.

You may want to check with whoever you think you might want wheels from. A lot of the aftermarket wheels are lug centric not hub centric, so the hub opening could already be large enough. My Rushforths were ordered way before I knew I would run a floater and I had no issues.
Point is I would ask be for I turn them down, unless you need it now to fit the Rally's.

That’s a good point. I am planning on Boze Lateral G’s and my understanding was they are hubcentric. I’ll verify that before firing up the lathe. I just left of the drive flange for now to use the rally’s for rollers. I appreciate your response.

I looked at the ipsco calipers you linked. They look well built but they are kinda pricy compared to the willwood version. I wonder if the price difference is justified. Anyone else have any advice on e-brake setups on floaters?
