I have a 355 small block chevy with only 5K miles. I'd like to dump the stock heads in favor of something with modern technology and hopefully better numbers. I'm willing to change the cam to match. I'd like to keep it very streetable. The motor is out of the car, so I can pretty much change anything. I was thinking AFR 180's or 195's.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Current build is:

2 bolt main block w/ ARP Stud Kit
TRW forged flatops
stock crank
stock rods with ARP bolts, shot peened, polished beams, balanced
Isky 270 Mega Cam
Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake
441 heads w/ minor porting 1.94 intake vlaves

GM fastburn heads or the new Platinum Series Dart Pro 1's.

You could probably have the Darts ported and still have them cost in the range of the AFR's, I've never been a huge fan of AFR's.

I say:

Dart Pro 1 180cc Intake (2.02/1.60).
Comp or Isky 280 cam.
keep the RPM intake.

I ran this combo in a 383 once. Kicked butt!

Waiting forever on the heads to come in... them not making some pretty easy changes that would save them coin and make the heads better for porting. (i.e. not cut the spring pockets so deep and take as much material off the valve cover rail. These two things would allow you to deepen the bowl and raise the roof in the port for even better power and flow, the funny thing is they even know about this and don't do it)

My guess to why they don't do this is because they seem to think the best head ports for their heads is their own, which I don't find to be the case.

Plus I just think the things are bricks. They are WAY to heavy. Strong, but heavy.

might be able to pick up some edelbrocks used for cheap. i like them but there are better out there for similar price tags new. i just figured it might be easier to find used ones since they probrably sell more than anyone else.

Thanks for all the inputs. I definately prefer new over used.

Just amazed at the range of intake runner volumes. Summit has several of the combo kits (heads, cam lifters, intake, etc) from Trick Flow, Edelbrock, Holley and Dart, etc.. It's interesting to see the claims for 400+ horsepower with intake runner volumes from 170 to 195. And GM heads are what 210cc for the 350 crate motors. So, I am just wondering what is optimal for my street setup?

Lots of posiive feedback on the Dart 180cc Pro 1's ...
lift int / exh
.200 134 114
.300 187 145
.400 231 164
.500 257 172
.600 261 174
.700 264 175 .........makes for a killer, real street and the "as cast" helps to keep the cost down. That makes for a killer value per dollar deal.:)
