Just getting underway on this all out build. Fast Track Chassis set to arrive mid January. Plans still in development, but thinking LS3 with Whipple (1000 HP) a T56 Mag Trans and all kinds of other cool stuff. My last Build was a 64 Fairlane K Code posted on this forum.

On the wood vs steel, do you plan to use it or show it? If use it, steel. If show it, wood. I know you can use a wood bed, but it's a lot easier to keep steel looking good while using it hard. Wood for show tends to be high quality, high dollar wood and using it as a truck means abusing it.

CSG

I have steel & I believe I like the look of wood better.

I'm waiting on my Rick's tank at the moment with twin 525 pumps. Doing a return-less system from vaporworx. Similar setup, Fastrack under a 56 bel air with Wegner 1Khp whipple motor. I'm not sure what the typical lead time is for Rick's, but I'm passing 9 weeks at the moment.

I would be concerned about moisture collecting between washer and body panel. I make an exact size plug and attach a stud to it with a stud welder. Or just use one of these as a backer and weld it up.

I thought about that and see your point. I didn't see how this would act any different then the multiple overlapping seems with spot welds on the pickup, besides my cars never see the rain :) Anyone who has worked on C10's knows what factory rust buckets they are.

Great build! I'm a big fan of that stainless tig exhaust welding...........love it. I don't know whether this will matter but I thought that when welding the o2 bung it has to be welded at the mid point(3:00 or 9:00) of the pipe or higher so that the condensation doesn't accumulate when cooling down and damage the sensor, I could be wrong. Anyways keep posting.

Engineering documents for mounting O2 sensors are a minimum of 15 degrees from horizontal and 45 degrees being preferred (I used to work for Bosch designing O2 sensors).

It keeps water from pooling around the sensor element, which can cause cracking at startup when the heater first comes on.

I won't say it hasn't been done differently, just putting the original intent out there.

Please explain the parking brake arrangement?

That is a Speedway Full Floater on the differential. The Back Rotors have a deep dish to them to offset and get lined up with the backing plate. So the brakes end up a bit inset from standard.

I didn't see a pivot on the top of the shoes. I see what looks to be a hydraulic cylinder on the bottom. Is that correct? Is there a pivot and I didn't see it or does the assemble go out with pressure to the inside of the rotor like the Ford Explorer rear?

Rolling_Thunder
02-03-2023, 05:56 PM
I believe BAER uses internal parking brake shoes from GM rear ends - they are a metal "C" shape of steel coated with cosmoline I believe with bonded brake material. These have just enough give to expand slightly to hold the internal brake surface of a drum/rotor assembly. I did quite a bit of research on these when I was trying to design a better mousetrap for my application.

This might be worth mentioning to people looking for shop tools, in the pics is an Ellis band saw. If you are in the market to buy a saw in the future, do yourself a favor and look at those. They aren't cheap but but do a wonderful job for most of us. :) Truck is looking good.

Yeah, I agree. Not sure about adding the matte black on the bottom now. Either way it was going to be a wrap on the bottom so it could happen later.

When I was in high school, I worked at a body shop as a painter after school. When that design of truck came out. it had a disc brake warning sticker on the tailgate. :) The factory lime gold was a similar color as to what you have chosen. I painted something on one of those trucks in that color. That was one of the 1st I painted. :) I'm waiting for the driving impression after completion. :)

Lots of things to love about this build but I have inquiry of two of them I may incorporate into my own truck...

I like the hoops on the harness bar to raise the harness mount point to the correct position rather than having the cross bar across the back glass. Are you a tall guy? What seats are you planning to run?

I am trying to follow the function of the intake air box. I see two filters. Are there two inlets to the box?

I like the hoops on the harness bar to raise the harness mount point to the correct position rather than having the cross bar across the back glass. Are you a tall guy? What seats are you planning to run? Not tall (5-10) running Sabelt seats.

I am trying to follow the function of the intake air box. I see two filters. Are there two inlets to the box? The box has an opening at the core support and one in the bottom that is cut into the inner fender. It then has a second box following the curve of the bottom of the inner fender that opens up on at below the bumper. Creates an air horn.

I looked back at some earlier pics and see the huge hole in the inner fender. That should provide plenty ambient air to the Whipple. I am curious why two inlets in the box though, guessing filter surface area needed for required CFM?

I do applaud the craftsman ship and ingenuity.

I do applaud the craftsman ship and ingenuity. Yep, just trying to get as much air as possible. Trying to create velocity through the tapered inlet pipe connecting the box to the supercharger snout.
