As some of you may know, Shay Campbell's 69 Camaro Camaro ended up here on Long Island in the hands of fellow member JimHamptons. And winters on Long Island are cold and boring. So what do we do? Take apart perfectly good cars and make changes. Well, this car is getting some big changes. The work is being done by Todd Tureski at TLT Race Tek in Water Mill, NY. As built by Shay Campbell, the car was a real sledgehammer. Killer 900HP burnout machine!

After the mods, the car will be more of a precision instrument.
-The heavily modified stock clip will be replaced with a 21st Century C5 clip.
-The blown big block will be replaced by the Thrasher's spare all aluminum fuel injected 580HP 400 small block.
-The TH400/Gear Vendors will be replaced by a paddle shifted Hughes 4L80E.

COOL! What a change in an already perfect car. Any idea what the weight bias change will be. Surely it is going on a very big diet up front. Should be a real canyon carver when finished.

The car had an iron block 502 with an intercooled Procharger. That plus the clip change should result in about a 300lb net diet and bias change. 4L80E's are heavy, but so are TH400/GV combos. Todd's shop is the real deal, so the car will be scaled when complete.

Jim has had his share of refined sports cars, so he expects the car to live up to the whole pro-touring ideal.

that was a killer car to begin with....should handle much better after the changes!
Steve have you ridden in a car with the 21st century clip on it? if so how does it compare to others?

Not only is he losing weight, he is losing really bad weight. The intercooler hanging off the nose, then the Procharger hanging off the front of the motor, which is well in front of the front tires, are really bad weight, not to metion the iron big block. Even though it is a 300lb diet, balance wise it will seem like much more.

Does he wanna sell the procharger? Had to ask

Travis,
This will be the first 21st Century car I get to drive. I should gain an interesting seat-of-the-pants perspective when compared to my car which has a modified ARDF C4 clip. Many differences between the two cars, but still a worthwhile comparison.
As for right now, I'm way more curious with how well the install goes. I'm driving Todd crazy with questions and comments. "What about this?....How'z that?......Lemme see!" Right now it all looks good, although the engine sure looks kinda high. I had to raise my engine to clear the modified rack location so the engine is supposed to go up.

The complete drivetrain has already been sold off.

That's the idea. Nothing wrong with the car in it's previous "sledgehammer" configuration, but Jim wants a scalpel instead.

it's an honest mistake...that car had more plumbing that most turbo cars anyway....si can see why at first glance it would apprear that way

Steevo, Jim, the car is looking great! I think with the changes you're making, the car will really take shape of what Jim is ultimately looking for. Let me know when Jim gets the car back, I've definitely gotta stop by and check it out in its new form.

Not yet, but I plan on having lots of seat time.. SOON!!
It should compare very well, the design seem well thought out and it's more adjustable than other units on the market.

Oh, that's right. He's Steve. Anyway, here's a shot of the "clearancing" required to fit the 4L80E with a 21st Century clip. Remember that the small block is higher and a touch further back that with an OE clip. So a 4L80E might clear in this area with a stock clip

Cool pic.. going to be starting to mod my tunnel next week.. the 4l80 is fatter and even with a stock clip you will probley have to mod the tunnel just a little. The 4l60 fit like a glove in my '69
Hey, Street Rodder came to my office and asked me install questions on the Shrifter.. looks like they are finally doing an install with it. (about time). I gave them the issue with my install story in it.

Steve, thanks for posting the pictures...
Thanks for the comments....I am looking forward to the end result of the car from a handling and overall driveability standpoint.
I feel fortunate to have a guy like Steve around to help me out regarding the process of making this car the way I want it. Todd at TLT is also a great car guy as well and I believe the project is in good hands. Shay surely built a great car that would fry the tires at will and I appreciate that as well.
Heck, I am looking forward to driving this car to work and also have fun on some twisty roads during lunch breaks.
I believe the car weighed in around 3,670 pounds when it was on the scales prior to ripping it apart for the new setup...So, I should have some solid weight loss numbers and front/rear weight ratios when the car is done.

Defintly a sweet car.
About how much does the 21st Century Subframe cost?

I have, don't jerk the wheel to fast unless you want to get whiplash.
Our convertible test mule will take more than I am willing to throw at it.

Jim, Do your sports car buddies like your camaro , or do they think you downgraded?
Car guys seem to be more open minded these days, less rivalry and more enjoyment.

Yeah. Let's start things off right with Power Tour. Borrowing each other's cars is no problem. You wreck it, you own it.
