I drove down to Louisville Kentucky to pick up the chassis. Friend of mine is a distributor and had to pick one up for another customer so he stacked mine on top and brought it to me. We separated them in the parking lot of our hotel. it created quite a spectacle.

Now that I have the chassis in place it was time to disassemble the car and begin bag and tagging everything

It's at this point that I wondered if I was insane to take apart a perfectly good running automobile.

So the plan was to purchase a Roadstershop chassis, put my perfectly clean rust free body on top then paint the car......... well I was shocked at what I found underneath the paint. Yes that's bondo that's about 1/4"-3/8" thick.

Yeah...the cost for this build just went up by 3 times the estimated cost.

Looks like someone did a hack installation of quarter panel skins. This should have been visible from inside the trunk.

It gets worse....someone put Camaro quarters on it. They filled in the grooves that are just behind the door or just in front of the rear wheels with bondo. I noticed it when taking out the quarter window regulators...... this will all be fixed

That's very disappointing. I hope they didn't use Camaro front inner fenders too, which don't fit right and are also common. Good thing your new frame has rack & pinion because the 1yr only/Firebird only steering components may have been replaced as well.

I think that every on of these builds go up by 3 X the estimated cost. And us power hungry, show hungry, comfort hungry guys surfing PTF is half the reason lol.

After the complete disappointment of finding out what I really had under that pretty white paint I decided get a little drastic....can't have a pro-touring chassis with an Earl Scheib body... The arguments with the wife begin in 3, 2, 1......175227175228

The only way to do this right is to start from scratch.....Cause if you don't, things will bite you in the arse later.....Learned this when building my pro-touring Chevelle.

Why, did you forget to circle her with chalk and mark "keep" as well? j/k :)
Glad you'll be fixing the quarters correctly. Shameful all the atrocities hidden underneath that beautiful car.

So I decided there is no salvaging the body at this point... it was time to gut everything. The only thing original is the roof, rocker panels, and deck lid. Everything else got scraped.

Wow, so it was THAT bad?! Amazing what can be hidden underneath what looked to be a pretty nice car.

Great build... reminds me of cutting the rear half off of my 68 Camaro & starting over.
Once it's all apart it gets overwhelming, like it will never be a car again.
Looks like you are doing it the right way. If it looks anything like your Chevelle, it will be really impressive.
Keep the pictures coming, it is nice to see the progress & should be really outstanding when done.
