I've been on these forums for a long time and have never made a build thread for my car, mostly because of the slow progress. Well I decided to create one to somewhat document the progress such that it is.

Some background. This car is the 3rd (of 16)(2nd 69) mustang I've owned. I bought it in December 1983 when stationed at Blytheville AFB Arkansas. It changed hands a couple of times before I got it but had come from Texas with a young airman. It actually got the 351C engine from my 72 Gran Torino sport at one time. It had a 351W 3 spd in it by the time I got it. I drove it for a while even moving it when I transfered to Grissom AFB Indiana. Sometime around late 84/early 85 I traded my frozen 429 SCJ motor I had for the 72 Gran Torino Sport for a 70 351C with completed machine work and ready to build. I built the cleveland and swapped out the windsor replacing the 3 spd and 8 inch rear with a close ratio 4 spd and 9 inch with 3.00-1 gears from a 70 cougar at the same time about March 85. I drove it pretty regularly till mid October 86 when I decided to rebuild the car. It's been in various states of dis-assembly ever since.

This past fall I contacted Ben on these forums and contracted him to do a rendering for my car as inspiration and to help motivate me to do more. I'm not getting any younger! This represents my vision for at least the exterior of my car.

I modeled the framing and interior layout in SolidWorks several years ago as I was redeveloping my plans for the car. Not 100% accurate but useful nonetheless.

I may tinker with it some more as I'm not 100% satisfied with it.

My stainless steel gas tank. It has a sump area below the larger opening. The sump has openings on each side and covered with SS mesh. I've filled the tank with fuel cell foam blocks to minimize fuel sloshing. The bottom panels angle towards the sump at about a 20 degree angle.

The engine is a 70 351C 4V with closed chambers.

Before I started disassembly.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/03/IMG0737-1.jpg (https://postimg.cc/56v4BWrn)

I've been buying parts here & there. I have all new ARP hardware, thermostat & housing, Quick Fuel SS-750-AN carb, Hamburger 1" carb spacer, MSD ignition system, Romac double row timing set, Aluminum external oil filter adapter, Hamburger remote filter mount, Mallory electric fuel pump & regulator, Aeromotive primary & secondary fuel filters, Aluminum fuel pump block-off plate, Milodon water pump, Moroso oil breather tank & coolant overflow tank, G+ oil cooler, gauge sending units and Felpro gasket set. I'll be reusing my Offenhauser Port-O-Sonic intake. I'm contemplating dry sumping the oil system or at least using an external pump.

Intake cleaned up and painted with Eastwood's ceramic engine paint. I really like how it turned out.

Street, I don't think it would pass any sanctioning body rules with some of my modifications. No big deal though.

I would not use the Powertrax but get a limited slip.... I had one... gave me traction on both wheels but was a pain in the corners.... just a bit of throttle and it locks causing wheelspin in a corner....specially in the wet it is just dangerous. It is just nice for drag racing.

Thanks Martin. Since I already have it, guess I'll see how it goes. I can always swap it out later.

Got my Scott Drake billet grille from CJPP. First one they sent was bent & distorted, got a replacement a week later.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/05/IMG0864-1.jpg (https://postimg.cc/tnNc14jt)

Started to weld them closed and shortly after decided it was a lost cause. Also decided to modify the housings by hacking off the back and moving the socket to the left side. Don't need that space anyhow with the LEDs in the lens. Plus gain back some trunk space.

I need to do a little more cleanup, POR15, then paint. I'll do the other one after I finish cleaning this one. I have new gaskets and hardware also.

I started working on the door caps for standard door panels. Removed the interior window weatherstrip, straightened the flange afterwards. Ordered new weatherstrip and lock knob grommets. Have to finish cleaning then paint them. I hadn't taken any pics of them.

Nice build. I'm interested to see what your plan is for the lower dash center section. I have a 69 Cougar which has the same factory lower dash as the Mustang. I moved the AC vents down to the factory radio slot to allow for a Pioneer Carplay head unit to be installed in where the vents used to be. I installed the Vintage Air controller in the factory HVAC control area but it is very hard to see the controls there. So i'm curious what your idea is.

Good Luck

Moving the vents sounds like a good solution.
Plan is switches, USB ports and different heater controls. Haven't nailed down the heater controls yet. I have a vision for a remote audio system which has yet to be defined.

It's more like rear bulkhead framing. With no rear seat, the area behind is partially open to the rear suspension. How far it intrudes vertically on the space behind the seats depends on the yet-to-be-determined upper link mounting of my 3-link and space needed for mufflers forward of the axle.

I've always liked the styling of the 69/70 coupes, especially since the FB's are so overpriced. Aren't you concerned about the extra weight of all the square tube?

69stang
07-27-2020, 04:27 PM
Definitely concerned. Hoping it balances out having removed a lot of metal towards the back and replacing metal up front with fiberglass parts. Unfortunately, I didn't have the chance to weigh it before taking apart so I'm only guessing. I figure once its back together we'll see and maybe make some adjustments.

Final shape achieved & primed. I'll wet sand the entire thing next with 320 grit and re-prime. Once I get everything smooth I'll spray with some KBS rust seal and SEP. Hopefully that will add a layer of chip protection to the fiberglass.

You might consider using the 2 part spay cans of primer to save you some work. I know they're pricey but if you line up several items and shoot at one time, it's easier on you in the long run. I think that front is going to look real good. :)

69stang
11-24-2020, 10:21 AM
Thanks wfo_guy.
The primer was some spray bomb I didn't like and figured since I'm going to sand most of it off anyhow I used it up. Since the spray bomb primer is not quick drying and I knew I wouldn't be able to get to wet sanding again for a while either thus giving it plenty of time to cure. I do have quarts of primer to use in one of the spray guns I have but wanted to use this stuff up anyhow. Hopefully, this filled most of the coarse sanding scratches. You can tell I hit it more heavily in some areas. I will definately be breaking out the spray gun for the next round of primer.

Back last spring I had surgery and then starting in June last year I had our kitchen completely gutted & remodeled. Had plumbing issues under the slab. Due to multiple issues, supply chain, ****ty contractor and other issues, didn't have a functional kitchen again till into November. That put my car on the back burner. I've been working on some things since spring but there hasn't been a lot of progress so far this year. I am trying to get some things accomplished.

Fabbed new accel pedal, wasn't an easy way to clean & rebuild original without cutting it up.

Also working on a pod for a clock for the right dash panel. Decided to make it symmetrical to better match LH gauge panel.

Some updates

Finished the RH dash panel
203920

Had the headlight bowls bead blasted. Trimmed and refinished for new headlights. I need to take pictures of the finished bowls.
203921

Found my throttle cable bracket won't work with my carb so started developing a new one, no pics yet. Cleaned & refinished some of the grill trim. Also, in the process of fitting the RH quarter on the car.

Interesting take on the RH dash panel. What does the button do?

looks great per usual

The button is to adjust the clock. My understanding is the button completes the ground bypassing the internal circuit that keeps time and advances the hands?? We'll see.

Updating
Modified my cowl panel. Cut away the grill bars, welded 1/8 rod around the perimeter of the opening, tack welded 1/4-20 studs to the bottom side, stripped, skim coated, primed, sanded, primed. It'll get SS or aluminum screening.

209512209513209514

Tacked rh quarter in place. Bumped out 2"

209515209516

Pulled the heads and had them reworked with new valves, springs, seats & seals. Had them set up for roller rockers. Also picked up an Offenhauser dual plane intake, had some recommended machining done then cleaned. I painted the heads & intake with Eastwoods ceramic engine paint.

209517209518

Pulled the block out of the car and finished disassembling. There was some surface rust in #2 & #4 cylinders. Number 6 piston has a broken ring groove wall between 2nd ring and oil ring. I don't know what happened to it, there was no rust in the cylinder and the piston slid out fine. I had forgotten my pistons had been knurled so I'm thinking I might be looking at minimal boring with the needed cylinder cleanup.

Updates
Front suspension is getting GlobalWest coilover negative roll kit with 4 piston 12.19 Wilwood discs. I had GlobalWest negative roll kit on it previously back in the 80s and am just upgrading to the coilover setup. I somehow got posting pics to work without getting an error message.

I like the way you've braced the shock towers to the outer edge of the firewall. It's something you don't often see on Falcon-chassis cars.

So, 70/71 351C 4V bored .030 over, Sealed Power flat top forged pistons, Eagle H-beam rods, Howards roller cam & rockers, Manley SS valves, Clevite main & rod bearings, Tim Meyer cam bearings and recommended oil mods, Melling high volume oil pump & pickup, ATI balancer, Trying out a modified Offenhauser dual port intake, Quickfuel 750AN carb, MSD electronic ignition, modified oil pan with larger sump baffles scraper and windage screen, Milidon water pump, CVF serpentine pulleys. Oh, ARP hardware throughout.

DynoSym5 predicts upper 400s for both torque and hp but there wasn't any good parameters for the Offenhauser intake so I take it as a rough estimate. If I use my Offenhauser Port-O-Sonic intake the numbers close in on 500.

Jaybee,
Thanks
