I assume that the trash pickup doesn't want to take old fuel tanks, lest they have fuel in them.

How do you get rid of one?

Gas is considered hazardous household material, in my county at least here in NJ. I was able to dispose of the leftover gas I had with the county and then just scrap the tank at the local scrap recycling yard. Check your town/county website for locations and times. Mine only accepted it during certain times on certain days. I found that out one day when I just loaded up the tank and drove over there, yeah, I had to go back another day.

Our scrap yard requires them to be cut in half. So if you want to toss it in the trash, I would think that would be an adequate way to dispose.

An old mechanic I know ran exhaust of car venting into tank to dry them out for cutting & welding safely.
I'd think Texas would be easier to get rid of in.

Empty the tank of gas, fill with water, dump the water and cut the tank in half..

I let my old tank set out in the sun for a week or so with the cap off and let the gas vapors dissipate then took it to a scrap yard.

I rinse them out and then crush them with my front end loader. Easy to dispose of then.
