Hi all,

I need a little advice on how to install a replacement tailpanel on my ‘68 Firebird, specifically how to properly weld the tailpanel to the quarter. I’ve watched a few videos where it was welded from inside the trunk, but there are still gaps. It seems like most people are ok with that and just add seam sealer.

I watched DSE’s build video on Tux (awesome video by the way). They welded the outside seam but somehow managed to maintain the look of the seam between the tailpanel and quarter. How did they go from this first image to the retaining the visible seam in the third image?

Thanks!

They did some awesome weld grinding.

Factory spot welded it it from the inside, no outside welding. Work your panels to close the gap before plug welding.

Thanks, Don. That is very helpful. I’ll give it a shot...and have a good body shop on standby to fix what whatever mess I inevitably make!

Looks like silicon bronze tig welds.
Maybe?
