I am about to purchase a road race style oil pan from Champ / CV Products. (CV pans made by champ). They have 3 different pickups to choose from to use with 3 different Melling high volume pumps. Two of them are 3/4" intake & the other is 5/8 intake tube. Is one prefered more than the other? Obviously the 3/4" will take more oil, but the intake & pump costs more. Is the price worth it?

Thanks,
Scot

Anyone have any thought on this?

Check with CV and find out if there is a specific pick-up required for the pan. If both are available, then choose based on the pump you want. The Mellings 555 pump is about as good as it gets.

Are those pickups specifically for your pan? If so, pick your pump and go.

You don't have any choices that are just standard volume? That's what I would go with.

What Bret said 100% - Standard volume pumps are the way to go.

Why not go with a high volume pump? I had always heard they are better.

Scot,

You don't need the volume if you set the bearing clearances correctly. The high volume only pumps more oil into the motor than you need, raises oil temps and takes more power to drive. It can also help wear out distributor gears especially on billet roller cam setups. A stock volume pump is fine for getting you the 55-60psi you need in a SBC.

Hmmm, CV & Champ only offer pickups for high volume pumps.
