How about this for a different build?

I recently hooked up with Mike Bulin to do a rendering of his wild '82 Frank Sinatra edition Chrysler Imperial project. Talk about Dare to be Different!

This plush ride will be converted to a pro touring style suspension rolling on 18x8.5 and 20x15 (!) Amani Snowflake style wheels and will sport a late model Hemi with Hilborn injection. In this case different is definitely cool!

What different car would you build if you could?

Never thought of this, but such a unique and cool looking idea!

My step-grandfather had an Imperial stored behind the tractors in the shop on the farm growing up. He would drive it 1x a year. Definitely not a car you would ever expect to see in the pro touring scene. I'm interested to see this come together.

Agreed. Although suspension systems seem highly geared towards specific platforms it's nice to see someone think way outside the box to keep the industry fresh. On FB someone commented that they know of a narrowed Viper rear suspension from a bailed out project that's for sale and contacted Mike. Who knows where this could lead. I'm looking forward to him getting it all done too!

Lol! Probably so. He and I didn't discuss interior yet, he said he'll address that as he gets further into it. He did say he wants to keep the styling of the factory seats only narrow them a bit to be more like bucket seats.

I just stumbled across a Bricklin SV-1 the other day. Thought it was a pretty cool funky looking car. Like a cross between a Delorean and a C4. Wouldnt mind turning one into a PT build.

A friend once showed me one of those (I think) in his brother's garage. It was a mess and needed a total rebuild but it was about the size of a 280Z, had a fiberglass body and was small block Ford powered. I'd imagine it was sold in the US, I wonder if that would qualify for CAM class racing? Would be cool and unique, that's for sure.

Several years ago a neighbor inherited an excellent condition ,obviously garaged, black early 80's imperial. It really was an eyecatching car that most people just wouldn't remember existed. Of course they kept it outside, never washed it, & it quickly regained it's age.
Not a featherweight, but definitely not anywhere near huge & heavy. Think one done right would make an awesome luxury musclerod.

Yep, it was a great understated era. Everyone complains about the lack of HP from the mid 70s through the 80s but what they're missing is the potential these cars had. Sure they got a little big in some cases, I'm a GM guy and refer to the Chevelles and other A bodies, but so were some of the performance cars of the 60s that coined the name of muscle cars. Not sure I've ever hear anyone talk negatively about a '66 427 4 speed powered Impala. Those 70's A bodies also had front suspension based on 2nd gen Camaro geometry and the same style 4 link rear as their popular '64-72 older brothers. With today's hp on tap I'm surprised revisiting the oddball forgotten cars of the 70s and 80s hasn't picked up more speed.
