What you think? Pulled it because it was super whiny on partial throttle and quite coasting. Measured back lash and it was about .020”

The fluid seem very shiny!

Put a magnet in the fluid and just a marble size of gunk stuck to it! Lots of metal sludge in the oil! Very little miles on this....No more than 250 miles

Certainly doesn't seem right to me. Maybe the gears had a poor heat treatment.

I just don’t feel like pulling mine again

The wear patterns look good; backlash and pinion depth seem to been set up properly. I'd change the fluid and look again in another 250 miles. Perhaps this is break-in wear?

Im committed to having it redone. The noise is just too much for me to bear.

Is US Gear made by Strange?

Not that I understand. US Gear is part of “Axle Tech”.

Do you think my gears look fine and the .020" BL is ok? The reason I ask is because if everything looks good, then Moser wont cover the noise. If thats the case, Ill probably send it to Gear FX instead of them if Im paying 100% of the work..

That's interesting. They don't mention anything about sound, but looks like a good alternative? Maybe those gears with the treatment from GearFX will do the trick?

I'm interested in this because I'm looking at the 9 inch as a possibility for my car and the only complaint I find is about gear noise. Don't hear about that with the 12 bolt...

Those gears are specifically advertised to be quite. Claimed to have "hobbing" like I heard OEM gears were. That gear set also has a REM finish option under the lightning series. It seems very promising that gear set will be quite and the REM service will make them the ultimate street gear in noise and performance.

Parts #s "07-890xxxSSISF"

I would bet that Moser will deny claims for noise etc.

Agree - wear pattern looks ok to me and the sludge is likely clutch break in. But the noise isn’t good. Can you put on a louder exhaust ? Haha

It’s a Tru-Trac, no clutches to make sludge.

Again identical situation as mine and Three of my other buddies with a dse moser Ford 9”. Mins got better after replacement gears but not perfect, another you can faintly hear and another that’s perfect after new gears

badazz81z28

I sure hope so. I got the isotropic finish on this gear and indeed the backlash was over 2x spec on the old gear. The new gear is at .009 and feels firm. I decided to put floater ends on the housing since it’s all disassembled, so soon to come and see if it makes noise.

Sure enough the new 3rd member cured the noise...good on Moser for fixing it, but also bad on Moser for that dumb ass that kept string me along telling me it was pinion angle.

Good deal. Glad you got that sorted.

I’m still searching for a 9” vendor. Looking at quick performance and Currie. I’ve used Currie before with good result but not sure it’s worth the extra $600 for the build I’ve specd

Good to hear your gear noise is gone, hopefully it will stay gone. C4racer, I have a Quick Performance 9" (from 5 years ago) and it makes noise. Not bad but can be annoying at times. If I were doing it today (or ever put a new gear in mine), I would invest the time and money into something like a GearFX unit. Pay once not twice.

Do you know what brand gear Moser used to fix your gear noise?

This is who I'm going to go to on my next set of gears. Sounds like this guy gets it.

US Gear with REM, the new stealth gear on the 3.90 wasn’t ready.

Glad that you have your issue fixed, I have a 9 inch that howls while cruising. I just ordered a new third member from Moser set up with the stealth gear. Hopefully it's as quiet as they say

I just ordered the US Gear Stealth Lightning in a 3.70 ratio for the Cougar.

I was thinking about adding that option as well. But the Moser sales guy said it wasn't an option with the stealth gear and I know that it is.

I talked to US gear directly. The guy I talked to (Leo) said that the Lightning process is available in any gear that US Gear offers. In fact, on Amazon, US Gear offers their standard gears with Lightning. Their part number nomenclature is pretty standard. The SS suffix indicates Stealth gears. The ISF suffix indicates Lightning gears. No suffix is the standard gears. I ordered 07-890370SSISF, which is a Stealth Lightning gear in a 3.70 ratio (presumably the 890 indicates Ford 9").

It's really good to know that aftermarket companies are finally addressing this problem. I'll be giving John and his Industries a call soon.

Just waiting to see if I need to change gears or clutch after adding the supercharger before I make the gear change. The noise is just annoying even though mine isn’t loud. Everything else is right in the car but a slight noise in the 3rd member.
