Hey kids.

I know I have asked this LOOOONGG ago, but I have forgotten, and truthfully dont remember if it was on this site. Anywhoo....can anyone tell me what gauge sheetmetal is most common on your late 70's Pontiacs? I assume 18 should do it. I HAVE 16 that I could use. I want to fab up a rear piece to hold my tail lights and gas filler. Is this overkill? How much more do you think it weighs over the 18? Actually, could I use 20 gauge?

I would imagine that 18 is close to right. It depends on how much "work" you will be doing to the filler. Any bending? If you're just cutting holes in it, the 16 gauge might be a little overkill but it will be good if you're using it to support anything. If it needs bent, it won't be supporting anything, and it's just a cover, I'd go with the 20 gauge because it would be a bit eaiser to work with.

Yeah, 16g is too much. I'd go with 18g for "structural" stuff, and 20g for everything else.
