Hows it going guy, Ive started a new project, and wanted to share on here.. It was a 1986 Grand National with 76k mikes, had a little of a built motor and has ran 11's in the 1/4(not me the previous owner. Well being a guy who cant leave crap alone I decided to rip her apart. I have bought a LT1 motor, a LT4 Blower, have a Texas Speed cam kit, a Wegner front Accessory drive, a built TR6060 with a 4th gen Fbody tail housing. I have some pics of what she looked like and will start with those. I have CCW's 18x9 front and 18x11.5 rear,(255 front and 315 rear) full Baer brakes, Quick Performance rear end. Im smoothing the firewall, pulling spare tire bump, adding Vintage air.. I notched the frame and added a ton of reinforcing, and boxed the frame, the frame is over at powder coating. I have a full QA1 coilover suspension, AGR steering box, aluminum bumper mounts, Griffen Radiator, Im adding a Dakota Digital dash, doing a PSI Harness, tore/tearing out all wiring and adding a american autowire kit, bought a GNX flare fit, and adding the GNX fender vents to help with keeping motor cooler., doing the Corbeau seats that look almost factory to a GN.. Car should be awesome. Shooting for 700 rwhp.. I blame this on Don Hutton, as Im in a holding pattern with paint(he is a popular guy) and I bore easily...EDIT... bleww LT1 up.. bought a Built LT4 from LME.. :)

LOL, did your wife buy that story? I told my wife the 57 Caballero purchase was your fault because you bought my 69 Camaro project.
Your garage is a mess, I’ve never seen it looking like that. :lmao:

Looks like a good start with the framework. I see you're going with the GN flares now. What size wheels you end up settling for?

Looks like a great project and one helluva start! You can easily fit 275/35/18 on the front. I'm running four of those on my 78 Malibu

got the motor back from refresh with Texas Speed cam and DOD/AFAM delete, new head gaskets, all the goodies, its a LT1 and I added the LT4 DI pump and Injectors. Put the Wegner Acessory drive on, with the Holley pan and Speed Engeering headers for a Gbody(limited vendors) Frame comes back tomorrow from Powder coating, than start assembly. Mocked up the CCW's for some motivation..Also worked on my TA I bought over from Lateral-G.. had a small mishap with a rear end and not a that of a womans rear end either

Love it! After sitting for 15 years, Im finally putting my GN back together.
Quick question, would you have been able to squeeze 335s on the rear?
Im hoping to, mini tubbed the frame as far as I could, but the body is off right now at another shop and Im trying to measure and hoping that these 335 BFGs I have here will fit under mine.

I get the frame back today/tomorrow morning, once I assemble I will have a realistic answer for you, the 315 I have no will definitely need a tub, and Im just not sure there is enough frame to "notch" you would have to move frame rails like others have done..

Thanks.
I notched as much as I could, but without my body back yet, not sure I’ll be able to squeeze them without having to massage the quarters...
These are just 275s as rollers.

What’s the wheel spec, those 275 are close to frame, I got 18x10 with a 285 on with no notch and some extra room before
Thanks.

These are just some Gen 5 Camaro wheels to roll the frame around right now. Didn't have anything else that cleared the brakes.
Just have these to mock up clearance, seeing how close is too close and then working out from there. Once I get the body back, I can measure, but figured Id ask you since your mini tub looks similar ;).

About 12 years ago I put a vintage air compac unit in my el camino. I made my block off panel buldge out a bit for more room inside, rather than curve back with the firewall. Cut most of the glovebox pocket out, but was able to leave enough to hold papers in. A shop gave me 2 defrost duct parts from I think a late 60's /early 70's mopar prefit kit that were a good size to the g-body dash defrost openings. I used round billet specialties ac ducts in custom dash, but most use pvc or abs water pipe fittings to connect aftermarket hoses to stock ducts.

Excited to see the direction you go with the firewall!
I bought my Vintage Air from Arizona GN, not a big fan of how his delete plate looks, but at least it comes with the brackets to mount the whole system under the dash.
Any visual improvements you can create for the delete plate under the hood will be awesome!

I agree, no one makes a cool panel, the AZ GN guys have a concept, but they built it for practical purpose, I really like DSE panels, so Im going for that look. First problem is it needs to be raised off the angle that it sits.. Im sure this is gonna be a pain in the ass, but Im gonna do it..

Was gonna get a pic of my cover, but too much stuff in front of it. Mine has very little angle to the face of it, top surface angles out , then down.
For a baseline, here's pics of what you're trying to be different from.
https://www.chevyhardcore.com/news/the-worlds-first-lt4-swapped-78-malibu-part-2/
One suggestion would be to do a neat component layout to the outside of all that empty area , which would make components easily accessible & look businesslike. Similar to the one in this article.

Just another FYI on welding::: none of us are getting any younger & seeing is getting to be a worse problem with me for welding.
There are magnifiers that slip behind the main lens of many helmets that can help, as long as it's not damp, hot & fogging them up.
Extra mobile lighting positioned above the welding area helps, positioned clos & or further away, as long as it's not shinning from the back of your head.
There are also premade clamp on lights that clamp to the handle or nozzle of a mig, or tape a tiny led flashlight to it.
When going back to fill in missed spots with mig, or sometimes a whole area with tig, fine red sharpie marks on the sides of areas than need more spotting help me to focus to them. Sharpie ink then easily wipes off with denatured alcohol.
Looks like you made your box project out a hint more than I did mine. I was able to cut & put back a small portion of the glove box pocket to the door, maybe you'll be able to keep the whole thing.

Never amazes me. I've had both Ford and Pontiac guys be completely billigerent to me, once they figured out they are LS powered. You're putting a friggin LT4 in there and doing a killer job. Who can complain about anything?!?!?

Kevin, you got enough people here that like what you're doing to tell the GN purists (your choice phrase).:fingersx:

I'm not a purist...and I love what you are doing but is there any particular reason you didn't use a regular Regal with all the changes you're making?
I can appreciate the build, for sure, but sometimes I wish people would stop "ruining" some of the rarer cars and trucks (like Syclones and Typhoons too).
And when I say "ruin" I mean build bad ass cars, but make it harder for me to get one someday. lol

It’s a valid question, I bought the car fairly cheap, 12k, after I sold the motor/Tranny, rear ended and seats, I have 7900 into a solid, good paint rolling chassis. I couldn’t, find a black regal, with all the blacked out trim.. the bumpers, window trim etc, the nice gray interior, the nice black paint for that.. so in the end I ended up saving money..by the the way, I’m getting a Typhoon(in negations now) can’t say I won’t do the same to it.. I’m into the fun of cars, not keeping a museum piece, I want to enjoy and race them around :)

Do you have any install pictures of the vintage air system? Mainly looking for the underdash pictures. I'm in the process of putting one in my 85 cutlass now and looking for mounting ideas and vent ideas. Thank you.
