Excuse my ignorance (coming from New Zealand), but why would they do away with the front number plate?

The question is, why would you have one in the first place?

Some states require a front plate and some don't. There's been an effort for awhile do do away with the front plate in Ohio with the biggest objections from LE agencies. The front of many newer cars is much cleaner without the mostly bulky & awkward brackets. A lot of people don't run a front plate or have it in the windshield. I think the law is they can't ticket you unless you're stopped for another reason. I was bummed to have to buy a frt plate bracket for my 11 mustang when I bought it 1.5 years ago as it didn't have one but with my speeding history and a red mustang I figured it was a matter of time before I got nailed. I did get nailed back in 90 when I got out of the military and moved back to Ohio. Was diving my 79 which was an Indiana (no frt plate) car and had no frt plate bracket. Got stopped for speeding by sheriff, had frt plate in windshield, got ticketed for no frt plate on top of speeding.

Andrew, the rest of the world all require front and rear number plates, so I was just interested in why some parts of the US don't.
Roger, thanks for your explanation above.
