View Full Version : '68 Mustang - no clearance to remove master cylinder???

'68 Mustang, 390, manual trans, power brakes, headers.

We're changing out the steering box, and have it unbolted and free. Its not coming out the bottom, as the headers and clutch z-bar are in the way (and no way I'm taking those headers off again). We'd have room to take it out the top if we could remove the master cylinder. But there's no clearance between the master cylinder and the shock tower to slide it forward enough to get it off the brake booster studs.

Anyone run into this? The factory manual says it should just slide off the studs, but it is very very close to the shock tower and can't slide forward enough. I'm wondering if its not the correct master cylinder for the car (looks pretty stock though).

Next step?

Thanks
Phil.

I've seen this on the 70 mustang with an aftermarket mc, and if I remember correctly I had to unbolt the booster from the firewall first. Then the master cylinder.

That worked - thanks!
