I have a 1978 Firebird that I am building and I want to add a backup camera. I have the parts, but I am looking for wiring ideas for the camera itself. My car has the gas fill located behind the fold down license plate so I am not sure ow I would keep the wires out of the way and long enough to allow for the license plate to move and provide access to the gas tank. Anyone have pictures or solutions for this? It may be straight forward, but I haven't spent anytime working this out yet and figured I would ask first. Thanks

Different car but here is what I did. Moved the gas filler up from behind the license plate and used a license plate frame with integrated backup camera. License plate light is the LED strip at the bottom of plate.

I have since dressed the wire so it is not hanging down...

that looks great, wish I had that option, there is no room to do that on the tail of the 2nd gen birds though.

So, I took some time to look at this and it seems the solution is pretty easy. I am going to wire the camera normal and run the wire into the trunk just like the fuel pump/sender. By running the camera wire down the license plate holder towards the bottom where the hinge is I don’t have to worry about the wire pulling or getting in the way of the filler neck. I love when anticipated problems have easy solutions like this.

There are some newer cars that offer a lip mounted camera integrated into the license plate light... I dont think youll find one made for a 78 firebird, but it could be pretty easily made

There are wireless cameras that the camera is in the plate frame.

I just pulled out a license plate mount with night vision lights camera I got years ago & never mounted. Think I'll integrate it into my custom made c-7 vette lower bumper, just above license plate. Universal external mount just too tacky for a show car.

the wireless cameras still need power and ground... Id avoid them if possible. A wired signal camera gives a much nicer video feed

I think it can be customized in a way that can make a modern cam fit. However, you need to give it to a pro, it is pretty hard to do with an old model like that.
