View Full Version : HELP - LSA Crate Engine won't fire

Hey guys,

Reaching out to the brotherhood in a time of need here, we've finally got our 69 Camaro fitted with an LSA crate engine with the GMPP LSA engine controller & Vaporworx CTSV fuel module. And just like all the car docs on tv we are madly trying to get it ready for a local RACEWARS event.

We tried to fire her up late yesterday, and after an initial small stumble it then just seemed to wind over.
We do have the malfunction light coming up on the GMPP fuse box but we couldn't read it with an OBDII reader (we're going to try another one this morning)

Everything has been connected as per GMPP engine controller kit, except we haven't hooked up the fan cooling circuit (is this necessary for start-up?)

Additional notes; We've also installed a new cam and valvetrain package / bigger injectors / 2.5" upper pulley & 9" lower pulley
Engine is brand new, in plastic, and we're wondering if we don't have enough cranking volts to initially wind her over fast enough.

Getting hold of some gauges today to check fuel and oil pressures - hoping it's just a fuel pressure adjustment :guilty:

Hoping we've just overlooked something simple life EFI noobs

Any advice from guys n gals encountering similar issues and solutions would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

If you used significantly bigger injectors with the stock tune you are likely drowning your motor. Stop trying to start it and get a new baseline tune for the bigger injectors before you wash out your rings....

Thanks for that reply Don,
We will try and swap back in the standard injectors for startup and see how that goes
** Fitted items are ID1050X - we'll save them for the tuner next week

Kevin just went through this exact scenario with his LSA last week...

I’m an old man so the stock LSA is all I need... :lmao:

Invaluable advice & greatly appreciated - I'll definitely try this first as soon as the shop opens in a few hours

We aimed to bump the LSA up a bit to keep the modern cars honest at track days
(we had a tough 496 but hard to resist the temptation of reliable and set and forget LS power)

I can’t guarantee that is your problem but it is worth trying the stock injectors.

Not hands on familiar with the crate engine controllers. I assume they are mostly plug & play, but that doesn't mean it can't come in with a couple of wires crossed or something.
Got any schematics with them to check wiring pin for pin? Sounds like something isn't happy if you get a malfunction light.

At this point, just trying to help you think.

Guys we got it to fire up - maybe just holding our tongues wrong + putting std injectors in may have helped, as it’s also a grumpy cam

Will send vid once running sweet

Thanks again guys - it truly is a great feeling to fire her up again.
It’s been parked up for 2 years (work and family commitments) and this mad rush to make the RACEWARS event is now looking viable

What an eventful week, we also had to pull the box out and modify the concentric slave so it’d release the clutch - but we made event scrutineering with an hour before cutoff [emoji12]
So we made it - heading to Racewars tomorrow
Will try and get some footage
